I own one of these,Does anyone know of a low cost way to get mags? I’ve been looking online and many say .223 AK mags will work with modification But I’m looking for some first hand knowledge and many of you seem to know your ass from a hole in the ground.So I thought I would ask here.

I’m sure you already know not to use Galil mags in a Valmet .223…
Yes, they fit and will even feed, but they feed at a very steep angle and you can get some serious set back of the bullet in the case on it’s way into the chamber, resulting in dangerous pressures and a kaboom.
I’ve not seen a kaboom first hand with Galil mags in a M76, but I’ve seen very serious set back and I’ve heard from guys I know about real life kabooms.
Tony Rumore of Tromix was taking both East German 5.56mm AK mags made for export, as well as Bulgarian polymer waffle mags in 5.56mm, and making them run in M76’s and M71 Valmets.
Might want to contact him and see if he still offers that.
Real Valmet .223 mags are made of unobtanium and are rude money when you can find them.
I had heard the Galils were a no no. I emailed Tromix via their site.We’ll see I guess.

Eh, the problem is there really isn’t a demand…not large enough to warrant making good quality mags.
None of these have been imported for 21 years…and there weren’t all that many over here to start with. The .223 caliber guns were really made for the US market. I had Finnish gun guys email me a few years back looking for parts, as there are NO parts for the .223 guns over in Finland.
What the Valmet M71 and M76 represent are beautifully executed Western Kalashnikovs of an earlier time. Valmet hasn’t made them in over a decade, and they never got the foreign sales that they were looking for.
Unfortunately, with the lack of spare parts and mags, in my mind at least, they’ve been relegated to purely collectable status.
I wish I had my M62/S and M76F 7.62x39mm back. :mad:
Back in the early 90’s I had one of the less than 40 7.62x39mm M76F’s that were imported, but sold it to a buddy without knowing that there were less than 40 in country…
