Utility and admin pouches?

I picked up a couple of these molle shingles from supply captain http://www.supplycaptain.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_ID=653&ParentCat=66with the intent of making them into shoulder bags that I could configure to fit what I want. The problem is I really don’t have a good idea about what pouches I should get to put on it. I wanted at the minimum a large pouch that could hold whatever and an admin pouch that could hold a light. I figure a large saw pouch might be a good option, but I don’t know what a good admin pouch might be. Anybody want to give me some recommendations?

Militarymorons has some good reviews. I have been wanting the Kifaru but can’t bring myself to drop that much on an admin pouch.

DIY Murse? What are you going to be using it for? When I needed something like that (bag on a sling) I just used the old Claymore mine bag. Those thing worked great back in the days when you played GI Joe without hard plates.

As far as using a SAW pouch as an admin pouch, it’s fine as long as it’s a legit SAW pouch. It has to have stiff sides and the shape should basically be a box with fold over lid that secures with Velcro and preferable either a snap (old school) or Fastex buckle. I used to use a LC2 SAW pouch on my web gear as my “junk pouch” and didn’t have too many issues with it while patrolling or falling out of various fixed wing. I used the drain grommet on the bottom and some 550 cord to make an anchor point for several dummy cords. Items that were used often, such as the Hobby-Lobby’d map, were stuffed down the front (away from body). Items that weren’t used as often were taped to a dummy-corded plastic square and faced toward the body. This setup worked well because nothing rolled around inside the pouch and didn’t become a pile at the bottom. The dummy cords can be a pain in the ass but it’s far better than the alternative.

They’ve got a ton of fancy MOLLE admin pouches out there, though. The Milspec Monkey variants, Velcro and zipper, are popular with a lot of gee-whiz types.

Well it all depends on your intended use. I can only give you my experience based on my use. My EDC bag, Kifaru Koala, has the Kifaru Organizer pocket mounted to the outside front. It’s a great admin pouch, but large and best suited on a bag or pack. It holds a notebook, pens, light, pen light, multitool, extra knife, keys, car charger etc., just about anything you need due to the roomy size. They are a bit pricey, but Kifaru is bomb proof gear.
Just ordered an Eagle Admin molle pouch for my SOHPC plate carrier. I tried the Maxpedition Monkey Admin but it is too think and wide. I run this set-up lean/light but and the Eagle pouch is much slimmer and has a larger amount of Velcro on the front which is what I needed for an ID tab and patch. Eagle makes and Admin with a specific light pouch as you mentioned, look here:

Between Maxpedition, Eagle, Tactical Tailor and ATS you can’t go wrong on standard sized admin pouches, just take a look and get what will work for your needs.

I’m leaning toward an Original S.O.E. Gear NSW Admin Panel myself.

I did a quick review on a couple of Original S.O.E. pieces. Good gear.

I bought the monkey admin pouch. sold it. to big

I was given an ats CLAP. to thin, not enough organization, don’t like flaps that i have to look down into.

looked at the HSGI admin pouch and it’s not laid out like i would like, but i like the clam shell.

Looked at the Zulu Frago and it’s laid out, but you run into that damn flap. The mega-admin is to big for my needs is as the chaos.

Then you come down to OSOE.
I tried the “eagle style”, you know the one that EVERY company produces? flap with a thing of velcro on the outside and a flashlight pouch to the side. yea didn’t work so much.

Then i tinkered with the nsw pouch the last time i was in camden.
and it’s basically everything i need. Clam shell, all the right organization, flashlight pouch on the fold down, velcro for attaching things like the 3x5 card holder do-hickey that john sells or gps pouch. but damn $60 is rough. totally worth it though. for anyone familiar with john’s work, you know it’s bomb proof.

I also got to demo a Esstac PakRat. had it been about half an inch taller it too would have worked for my needs. Problem is finding it in my beloved multicam. check that. at all. all esstac’s vendors are out of them.

ETA: my first choice would be to get a <slightly> enlarged pakrat. second choice would be the nsw admin pouch.
