The USMC is planning to acquire 3 batteries of Rafael/Raytheon’s ‘Iron Dome’ based MRIC missile defense systems. Some numbers in a procurement notice posted today include 80 initial Tamir missiles for prototype development followed by 1,840 additional missiles & 44 launchers.

This is one of the clearest pictures with the USMC’s #MRIC launcher. #MRIC utilizes the Iron Dome’s Tamir interceptor, a USMC expeditionary launcher, and AN/TPS-80 radar to provide a Cruise Missile Defense capability to the Marines.

I assume to support/protect their “island defense” strategy. This has China written all over it as far as who it’s intended for.

I have high hopes for this program, a combat tested off the shelf system that will likely work on day 1 might be some kind of record in US military procurment. I think they will have to supplement with a gun based short range system as coping with a drone swarm in an economic and sustainable manner is going to be a challenge.
