Using TT 20 Round Mag Pouches w/ 30 Round Mags

TT makes these 20 round mag pouches here -

And the 30 round pouches here -

I am thinking about using the 20 round pouches as they give you more real estate to grab the mag.

The question I have, is it too much real estate? Has anyone run these on the front of a vest and had problems?

I have thought about doing the exact same thing, my only concern was the the retention cords (not a clue what they’re called), and how they might function if 30’s were used.

One of the best inexpensive purchases I’ve made in the last 2 years is a roll of desert shock cord: http://www.supplycaptain.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_ID=25&ParentCat=16

I’ve lost track of all the little things I’ve used that stuff for. Replacement zipper pulls, belt keepers, the uses are endless.

The shorty pouches for 30s are very likely to work very well for you, unless you’re jumping out of planes. That requires flaps and whatnot. Not having enough cloth real estate is unlikely to be a problem with these. Get some shock cord and replace the existing retention with longer; all it takes is a pair of scissors, a lighter to fuse ends, and some overhand or figure-8 knots

Unless married to the idea of a shorty pouch with active retention, there are also other shorty options.

No jumping out of planes for me.
They would be going on a ITHSHF/EOTHAWKI vest. Just running, laying prone, etc. I was just worried that they might be to short and have issues.

I have been looking at TACO pouches too. They seem to have added versatility to them which could always be a plus.

On the down side, that versatility does not necessarily come cheap either. I was thinking of mixing them up and using mostly regular pouches like TT’s and then a couple of TACO’s.

What else do you recommend?

Tacos are good. I have two and I’d still use them.
-PALS webbing one uses to mount them is TIGHT. Not a ding, really, but it takes some concerted effort to get them on with Malice clips. If you end up needing to move them, you’ll end up looking at your belt or vest/chest rig and sigh heavily.

-passive retention is good, but you may find one-handed insertions to be a pain in the berries once you get the shock cord tightened to the point that mags won’t move up and down when running/jumping/climbing on the jungle gym.

-great for off-size/shape items other than mags

Eagle FB are good, pretty much the industry standard for a passive retention pouch for a lot of years, the way I see it.
-taller than you want, though not significantly so. I still have a pair, though they’re on my alternate belt.

-the kydex box that works so well for retention is bulky, and you can’t stack other pouches, if that’s a concern.

-spendy, of course.

USGG. This gent has a double on his belt: https://www.m4carbine.net/showpost.php?p=860974&postcount=538
-not pricey, great retention, and you can stack.

-velcro mountings are a maybe/maybe-not.

Emdom IAP: http://prostores2.carrierzone.com/servlet/emdomusa/Detail?no=78

Currently 2 on my main belt setup, and my favorites.
-least pricey

-height-adjustable on whatever you mount them to

-retention so good it’s almost revolting

-singles only, no multiples

-can’t stack

Thanks for the recommendations.

I think I might got with the one from USGG.

Another question, I see people mount their pistol mag pouches on the front of the rifle mag pouches. When the rifle mags are in there it is a pretty solid mounting surfaces. What about when the rifle mags are not in there?
