So one of my upper receivers seems to have been torqued a little bit to where the pins can be difficult to remove at times. It is something I was planning on replacing anyways as it is a RRA receiver that i bought many years ago when I didnt know any better but this gives me even more reason to do so. It is just on a plinker anyways so it doesn’t bother me too much at the moment but my question is, will this hurt its accuracy or cause any other issues? It looks fine to the naked eye, it is only when separating from the lower that you notice something is off. I don’t want to sell it to someone as it is obviously a bit messed up but I feel wasteful throwing it away if it would still function fine but just be an annoyance when separating from the lower.
You don’t have a torqued/twisted lower. You just don’t…the gun wouldn’t function if somehow it was twisted, the bolt would lock up or drag in the upper.
Did you assemble the lower yourself…better yet, assembled by you with a low quality parts kit?
Sounds like low quality detent pins snagging low quality takedown pins. Just use a bullet, a glock armorers tool, or anything to help push it out…even a punch.
If all else is functioning fine, then there’s no issue. If somehow it was mysteriously twisted, then accuracy would only suffer with iron sights.
I really don’t think you have an issue worth worrying about…and I doubt you shoot it enough for it to matter since its only a plinking rifle. And not a defensive/duty/training weapon.
If it was twisted, the bolt would be scraping the shit out of the receiver…and the bolt would be dragging most likely on the buffer tube pin.
I really think its just a cosmetic hassle…if it shoots when you pull the trigger, hits what your aiming at, and does so without fail…then there’s no issue.
The reason it seems to be twisted is because when I mate up my other upper to the same lower and use the same pins it goes in very smoothly, throw this upper in and it is a ridiculously tight fit.
The only thing I can think of that might have caused this was back when I was dumb and didn’t know better, I took the barrel nut off without using the proper vice tools. Before that I didn’t have any trouble separating the upper.
So this upper fit good before you messed with the barrel nut? Are you mating it to the same lower as before? With RAA my first assumption would be that’s it’s just an out of spec part. I have various upper and lower receivers and some barely fit together while different combinations are very lose.
I wanted to see if you guys thought it was a problem. I am not an expert so just because it functions I wasn’t sure if there was something I was missing.
And to address the post above, it fit well prior to me messing with the barrel nut.
Sounds like I should just keep on plugging away and not worry about it too much.
So you have an upper you boogered up but it still works. I would shoot it. You don’t want to scrap it, you don’t want to cheat someone, what else can you do?
All uppers fit differently. There are threads here that show brand new uppers not fitting into brand new lowers. Threads all over the place with guys having to drive pins in with plastic hammers on well known from the factory uppers and lowers. You have a tight upper. Go out and run a couple thousand rounds through it and I bet it will no longer be an issue.
