Upper and Ammo combo?

Guys,
The PD runs 60 gr. TAP ammo. 223 REM for duty use, and XM193 55 grain for practice.

The TAP box reads 2950 fps (100 yds ,+1.5"; 200 yds, 0.0"; 300 yds, -8.0")

Does anyone know the barrel length that TAP/Hornaday uses to get this velocity?

I currently run a 16.1" barrel, but I am considering purchasing an 11.5" upper to make getting in and out of vehicles easier…

Does anyone know if the TAP ammo will fragment as advertised through a 11.5"?

Anyone got any opinions/facts/experiences to share? It would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jack

They probably arrive at that velocity from a 20" barrel.

Before putting a 11.5" upper on a lower it would be best to make sure that it’s either a registered machinegun or a registered SBR.

Robb,
Thanks for the legal advice, the fee to register my lower is the reason I asked if anyone knows if the 60 gr TAP will work as it is supposed to work? Will the drop in length drop the velocity to unacceptable levels?

I use the 16 now and was hoping the 11.5 would be more vehicle operation friendly.

I’ve never chrono’d 60gr out of an 11.5" but I imagine it’s somewhere around 2500fps. Probably not very good for anything but 50yds or so. 55gr FMJ would probably serve better out of an 11.5" If you can get 1x7 10.5-11.5" barrel and get the Dept to sign off and use 75gr TAP, I think this would be best. Just my opinion, also 75gr is what I carry around w/my 10" LMT for when the zombies attack. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thank you Robb
