I recently purchased a scar 17s (.308) and am trying to determine some optics for it but cant really decide what I want, any thoughts?
sure. i’d recommend a red dot sight, a low power variable scope (like a 1-4x), a fixed power scope, or a high power variable scope depending on what you want to use it for.
well right now i’m just using it for recreational shooting but would like to use it for more than that, thanks!
I think mm might be telling you that without the intended use, there is no basis to make any suggestions. Lots of threads here and in the stickys on various optics - for different uses.
any companies anyone would recommend would be great also
Sure Achan.
The absolute best optic for your Scar 17 is . . .
it all depends on what you are using it for.
Are you running with it and shooting steel/paper?
Are you shooting for group size?
Will it be a hunting rifle?
What distance will you be using it?
What distance will you be training at?
Best optic really depends on you actually using the rifle for something.
Under 300 meters you can get by with iron sights or a red dot.
300-600 meters you’ll want a little magnification, maybe a 4x ACOG.
600+ you’ll want more magnification and possibly want to be able to dial adjustments.
There are lots of options out there, best for you means best for how you use it.
-
Go shoot it.
-
Shoot it some more.
-
Shoot it and think about where and when you are going to shoot it.
-
Come here and tell us how it shoots and how you use it and how you want to use it and ask about optics.
Otherwise just get yourself a 1-15x variable and be good for everything.
Needs better description of what you want it to do. Tactical vs recreational can have 0 difference in how you gear (besides wanting better quality for when your life is on the line vs punching holes in paper and none shooty stabby critters).
A red dot would be just fine for anything in 200 yards as a combat optic, beyond that you may want a magnifying scope, if your going out to 600 yards+ all the time then a higher power scope, etc. Just for examples.
Mission drives the gear. After that is established some good brands can be dropped as well as models for what your looking for.
Define recreational shooting. If you’re shooting out to 300m or less I would say an Aimpoint T-1 or H-1 with 2 MOA dot would be a great choice. That’s also what I would choose for any kind of defensive use. If you want to shoot further or hunt with it try a 1-4x optic. I’ve used the Elcan SpectreDR and it works well but is expenxive and heavy. I’ve seen the Trijicon Accupoint recommended here but have no experience myself. A user named “alaskapopo” has a lot of good post regarding variable mag low powered optics. Finally if you’re mainly going to shoot past 600m get a quality variable powered scope that tops out at 10- or 15x, preferably with a Horus reticle and definately with MIL adjustable turrets. A good example that won’t break the bank is Leupold’s Mk 4 with MIL turrets and the H-27 reticle.
It’s expensive to get into quality kit and can be confusing, but that’s all part pf the fun. The good news is you have an excellent rifle and you’re on the right track seeking good advice. For what it’s worth I’ve used a SCAR for a coup,e years and I still can’t decide what the ideal optic would be. There are some outstanding optics out there like the S&B Short Dot that would be great if I could afford them. Weight is also an issue. Leupold’s upcoming 1-6 looks promising but who know how long the wait for that will be.
I heard great things about Counter Sniper optics and their patented Barrilium coating. It would look great on a hi tech gun like SCAR.
I put a burris 1-4x tac 30 on mine. It isn’t high dollar but it works for me.
Get a NF 2.5-10 mil mil or 3.5-15 mil dot. Mil turrets
LARUE 20 QD base /rings.
There’s a couple ‘o’ hundred pounds of reading you could be doing if “…more than that…” is the sole means you have to define what it is for which you intend to use this gun.
