I purchased a lightly used gas piston Bushmaster AR a few months ago and think it’s quite the fine weapon. I was told it had a 2 stage trigger which I assume is stock.
Being a southpaw I wanted to add a few LH’d features to make handling just a little easier. I started w/ the ambi “star safety” from DPMS. When I went to remove the stock safety there was a threaded “rod” rising out of it, just left of the detent adjustment. Never saw anything like it. It’s not slotted or hex’d for removal that I can tell. At least my smallest hex key won’t fit the hole at the top. There’s no way to rotate it rearwards that would let me get a look at the underside for access to perhaps see a hidden set screw.
Unless I remove that threaded feature the safety will not come out. I hope this is something simple and I haven’t stumbled into something exotic that turns out to be a PITA.
Bushmaster’s manuals/schematics aren’t forthcoming and don’t even reflect that part.
One is for adjust the safety to make sure it’ll fire when on the fire mode.
Not sure on the other as I don’t like non-standard safeties. Usually one is to ensure it’ll fire when on fire and the other to ensure it won’t fire when on safe.
You’ll obviously have the remove the grip, selector detent and spring. Then remove the hammer, pin and spring. If you can remove the trigger, spring, disconnector and trigger. Then spin the safety all the way around and remove that other screw.
