Ultra Bore Coat vs Sweetshooter

Some people swear by Ultra Bore Coat for permanently filling the micropores of barrels to prevent powder and copper fouling.

I was almost ready to order Ultra Bore Coat but I came across a similar product called Sweetshooter by Tecrolan. It appears that Tecrolan has been selling this stuff to coat cylinders in auto engines for some time. It costs much less than UBC (about $20 vs $44 for UBC). The chemistry may be the same since the cleaning/application routines are similar but it’s hard to tell from the data presented by both companies. They both claim that their product consists of micro sized particles that get into the micropores of the barrel. They both require that the product be allowed to dry and then recommend shooting rounds to “set” the product in the pores.

I have a new chromed barrel (even chromed bores have micropores) and want to start out with the best case.

Has anyone tried Sweetshooter? A gun shop where I first found it swears by this product.

Guys I have talked to say they never have to use a brush to remove fouling after treating barrels with UBC. They also say that cleaning requires fewer patches to remove powder and copper residue. If these guys are right then the product seems to have some merit.

If you have experience to the contrary please let me know.

you should ask the guys on lightfighter.net about cleaning products :wink: Pat Rogers has some interesting things to say about cleaning ARs. Pay close attention to what is being said about “filthy 14”.

It’s chrome lined - I spray some G96 CLP down it, run a bore snake once and call it clean.

Handguns and non chrome-lined barrels get Gunslick foaming bore cleaner for 30 mins and a couple patches followed by one oil patch. Done.

There is also a product called Microlon Gun Juice that claims to do the same thing. I have never tried it, but have always wondered how well it works.

Thanks for your cleaning routine. I like the bore snake for quick cleaning but it has a brush embedded in it that I would like to avoid on a virgin chrome barrel if possible. I think I will do some more research and if I do try either the UBC or other products I will report how it worked out.
