My team was on the range today and we were chatting about the DOS qualification targets. One of our members is from Ireland, and mentioned that such style targets are not allowed at gun clubs. In fact, he related a story of a fellow shooter who had the police visit a club and took him away because he was using such realistic targets. Even the black silhouette targets are frowned upon.
From what he said, any target that suggests you are training to shoot humans is frowned upon.
yuppp !! same here, County owned and operated, no realistic targets, such as Osama, the NK little fat guy, Castro, etc., politics, don’t ya just love it when it goes to the shooting range ?
a few years ago i could have bought a fully functional shooting range on 20 acres…, all i needed was $725,000.00
Without trying to support their stance, the NRA’s position is a pretty simple one: they’re both politically active and politically endangered. The last thing they need is to look like they’re promoting the killing of human beings.
At the NRA Range in Fairfax, VA the rule is “no eyes, no ears, no arms” … Anything that goes beyond looking human-shaped to having actual human features is not allowed. While it causes some grief for LE who want to practice using some departments’ targets, I’ve also seen it stop people from using pictures of old girlfriends, political figures, etc.
The NRA Range has had news organizations show up unannounced before. They do not want some reporter or TV crew to pop in and get film of Billy Bob blowing away a photo of Ted Kennedy.
However, all throughout the country at various gun ranges this attitute is on full display and always taken further than the common sense stuff you listed. Crotchety old codgers and oblivious “sportsmen” who run these ranges forbid shooting at anything that looks like a “silhouette”… I know that I am damn lucky where I shoot now because all over Western PA the general rules at ranges are hostile to anything remotely resembling defensive firearms use.
The last indoor range I patronized made it clear that head shots and double-taps were forbidden. Makes it somewhat difficult when you trained for years using both of the above.
