“Based on the evidence of intentional racial discrimination that was presented last year in the redistricting case, Texas v. Holder … we believe that the State of Texas should be required to go through a preclearance process whenever it changes its voting laws and practices,” Holder told the annual conference of the National Urban League, a civil rights organization, which is meeting in Philadelphia.
The Obama administration has been searching for new ways to oppose voting discrimination since the U.S. Supreme Court in June invalidated a key part of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
A 5-4 conservative majority on the high court ruled that a formula used to determine which states and localities were subject to extra federal scrutiny was outdated.
The ruling freed Texas and select other jurisdictions from having to submit their voting laws to the Justice Department before they could take effect.
The covered jurisdictions were mostly in the South, a region where officials had a history of denying minorities the right to vote. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the high court’s ruling that the South had changed dramatically.
Holder’s Justice Department had used the process known as “preclearance” to block, among other laws, a new plan for congressional district lines in Texas drawn after the 2010 U.S. Census.
If you can’t get it done one way, then try, try again…
Of course they do. But oddly enough I can remember when the Dems won, they were constantly redrawing the lines. I just wonder when Holder and company will decide to make the law read something like; “in order to rectify discrimination in the past, all future elections will be held with all registered Democrat Party members eligible to cast two votes instead of one”. My guess some would still abuse this.
Holder knows his party has to get as many illegals here as they can, get them addicted to the tax payer tit to expand their voter base, and further compete with the white majority.
Agreed. To the subject, it’s par for the course. This administration has adopted the “Let’s not do what we’re supposed to be doing, let’s see what we can get away with” philosophy. They have attempted to get around Congress through appointing unaccountable Czars, executive order, and the AG choosing to enforce or ignore laws, or prosecute states that do not favor this administration or assist in the next election. In TX’s case, it is clearly an attempt to allow illegals to vote in an attempt to turn the state ‘blue’ in the next election. The same reason they are after all the Red states who try to adopt voter ID. Then cry civil rights denial, while promoting illegal alien participation, as the by product. SCOTUS ruling be damned. I hope TX jams it all the way in, then brakes it off in Holder’s ass.
And all this in the first year after the reelection. I can’t really expand on what Roger said but adding in that I hope the American people are finally going to become fed up with it. But with what’s happening now, just imagine what it’s going to be like closer to the end.
