I am planning to move in about 6-8 months but I want to get my Form 1 in the works ASAP. I will be in the same city but wondering if a change of street address during the approval period will cause a CF or do I just wait until I move?
Does the name of the trust need to be the trust owner’s legal name (Joe Smith Trust), or can it be a fictitious name (SoftKittyTrust)?
Any helpful input appreciated.
If you are staying in the same area, I don’t see how it matters other than they will be mailing your Form 1’s to the address provided on the Form 1’s when you filled hem out.
As for the trust name, you can name it whatever you want, but I wouldn’t get too wild.
But remember that whatever you name it, you have to have that engraved on your firearm, so I’d keep it as short as possible.

You will need to fill out a form 5320.20 and on number 2 check No that the firearms will not be returned to the original location. Also this is a good way to get your approval done quicker. When I was moving in state, I just called and said I was worried about the stamp not getting forwarded, and they approved it while I was on the phone. From my understanding I think they will do this in most cases.
And the other answer on the Trust is good advice. Keep it short and just use your last name like Smith Revocable Living Trust (and you can’t abbreviate on the forms or any engravings).
With regards to this, do NOT include the type of trust in the name.
The details of the type of trust can be handled in the trust, but there is no reason to have it in the name.
That is one reason I said to heck with using Quicken Willmaker, as it wouldn’t allow me to remove that crap from the name.
My trust is a revocable living trust, but the name of it is ‘My last Name’ Trust, which makes engraving it much easier.

The attorney that did mine named it my last name NFA Firearms Trust. I wanted to name it after my dog but he suggested that just in case if I had my last name on the paperwork some local PD would be less likely to have a fit.
You do not have to notify the ATF of an in-state move.
Be careful, if you know that you’ll be moving, that you won’t loose your forms if the ATF mails them late… but once you have your forms in hand, move anywhere and often, within your state, there is no need to notify the ATF.
On my Willmaker trust, I generated the trust and then exported a text version, and opened it in MS Word. I added a line that basically said ‘…the John Doe Trust, which shall be known as the JD Trust…’ I made sure the new name of the trust matched every other place in the document that it appeared, printed it, and called it good.
Correct. The above was an example, albeit a poor example. It is an RL Trust, but you can call it whatever you want. Just do not abbreviate on the forms, engraving, etc.
