Trying to Start a Team

I am a teacher at a high school in Northwestern North Carolina and several faculty members know I love shooting and asked if I would consider starting a shooting team for our school. In doing some research online, there are many different directions to go with a shooting team. Some go through the JROTC component, some go through the hunter safety program kids do in freshman PE, some take a strictly competative approach.

As you can probably imagine, the legal system is not conducive to making a shooting team easy to start in public schools (no firearms on campus, no firearms in school vehicles, etc.). I was able to get a gunshop to offer us anything we need at company cost, but the expense involved in starting a team is going to be substantial. Our school has a rule that any team on campus can only have one fund raiser per year, further complicating matters.

I guess what I am trying to find out is do any of you lead such teams or have relatives involved? If so, how does their school find matches, get funding, get around regulations, etc.? I am certain that I can find someone in our district that would loan us the use of their cow pasture to practice a couple of times a week, but any advice on the rest of the problems associtated with starting such a program would be greatly appreciated.

Have you thought about contacting one of the local 4H chapters, or a regional Appleseed shooting group? They might be able to assist.

Good luck to you!

May do that, thanks!

Contact your local 4-h chapter,CMP,JROTC, and local FNRA/NRA.

My dad has taught 4h .22 rifle at a private HS that has a on campus range and JROTC/4H program and shooting team since before I could join the program. You dont have to be on campus to do these things. Some of the more rural public HS’s do it, but I’m sure they’ve had some serious help with indoor ranges and such. I was on the 4h team, and we and the HS team would go to the state matches together.

For 4h, CMP supplied the ammo, and old WW2 ear target rifles. the range got a 5G grant from FNRA for new vent system, foam walls and a range clock.

If you can’t make any headway with local contacts, this is the program. they might be able to set you in a direction.
