tru glo tfo?

LOVE the concept. i read some sketchy things on other sights, but most of the sketchiness seems to come from window licking, kool aid drinking, posers. it seems the good opinions come from more credible sources. any experiences?

I have them on two guns. They are great IMHO. They work for my eyes.

I’ve heard good and bad…Good that they are awesome sights and work very well in different lighting conditions…Bad in the fact that they are not durable and tend to break. Why not give them a whirl on a range gun and determine whether you would put them on your HD/sd gun

A lot of guys in my agency use and like them. I tried them and went back to Mepro’s, but it is just my personal preference.

Wife has had them on her duty gun (G17) for about 8mos. Work great, she likes them a lot. I was going to swap mine over as well, but I have some experimenting to do.

I dislike them. Used them for a few months on a SIG while I worked there. My criticisms:

[ul]
[li]Front sight is just far, far, far too wide.
[/li][li]Rear sight glow overwhelms front sight. The rear sight is an abomination even if you like the front sight.
[/li][li]No easy way to remove the FO tube when it gets dirty and/or scratched. Over the course of about 10,000 rounds my FO got dulled enough to be noticeably less useful.
[/li][li]While there’s no easy way to remove the tube on purpose, many folks have reported their tubes falling out unintentionally.
[/li][li]When they’re new, they’re extremely visible outdoors and decent in extremely low light. In between, they’re less visible than tritium sights with white outlines or similar high-visibility front sights.

The concept is great but the execution is poor, IMO.

It’s a great concept, but IMO they just are not sturdy enough for anything other than a range toy. I also witnessed an issue with them during a defensive handgun training, outside on a sunny day a shooter was having all sorts of problems. The instructor (Louis Awerbuck) immediately realized what the problem was when he saw the student was using TFOs…the rear sights are too bright and overpower the front sight. This is the opposite effect of an ideal sight setup.

They really do shine on the range though, especially indoors. That’s about all I’d consider them for.

Since you asked for actual experience with them. I think I can give you some good info. First of all I think is one of the best ideas in the history of pistol sights. It is a best of both worlds idea. BUT they are not very durable. I had them on my duty 17 for awhile. I also had them on a 34 match gun. From the very beginning I started having problems. When I got my two sets both rear sights were milled differently. One had to be filed down to be installed and the other was so loose that it could be slid through the sight groove without hardly making contact with the groove. Truglo told me the loose one would be fine after installed and the set screw was used. Well I can tell you that didn’t work long. They ended up replacing that set. The next set did not last long either the front fiber optic rod broke so back to truglo.

In total I had three sets sent back. Plus the the set that I had to file down to work. Like I said I think it is one of the best concepts but the sights just are not durable enough for a gun that is used as a duty or defensive weapon.

Matt

Since mine havent broke yet I cannnot comment of the robustness; however, the sights themselves are horrible as far as sights go. The front sight is HUGE in terms of width which just doesnt lent itself well to shooting. Also the front sight hang back considerably. Everytime you hear someone complaining about the sight radius of their subcompact gun realize that if you are shooting a midsize gun by putting on TFO’s you will be making the sight radius basically simmilar to a subcompact.

Good idea, horrible execution. I will be switching them out as soon as is convient.

Rob_s… Thanks for the link. Oddly, I tried running a search- always do. I think the search function is case sensitive because when I type it in like you wrote it, it shows up. Thanks for everyone’s feedback.
