I’m kinda torn on what to do on this build. I know I’m getting an aimpoint pro. I’ve gotta get back up sights though. Do I need to go all out and get some troy battle sights or should I save the loot for am and get some magpuls or something else?
Plastic sights are better than no sights at all but that’s about it.
After they are zeroed and folded, do you ever plan to raise them? If not, then Magpul should work fine. If the optic will spend time on another rifle, then Troys would be my. choice.
I think I might try to find both used and get the best of both worlds
How much is the overall build? You’re spending $425 on the PRO. I’d buy the nice Troy set so I don’t have to bother with it again. That’s just me though.
Grizzman kinda hit it on the head though. I’ll sight them in and as long as the aimpoint never fails, they will never be used…
In that case why have back up sights at all?? Just use your dead PRO as a giant ghostring. My point is… If you really think you need BUIS you don’t want plastic! What kills me is the guy with a FSB running a cheap ass plastic rear sight. Bullet proof on one end and disposable on the other.
MBUS aren’t bad at all.

Only reason I went with the pro version was smaller size.
I’ve seen numerous aimpoint comp m2 and comp m4 break but that’s part of being an airborne unit but I have a personal rule for my personal guns is that if I’m not using an actual scope then it gets flip up or fixed irons, if it has a scope it gets offset irons. And I run troy go on all my stuff. I don’t like the picture that much on magpul sights, I haven’t tried the magpul pros yet. But for a duty or go bag gun then yeah get some Troy sights
You could always just use your Aimpoint Pro and wait for a sale to come along and see what brands is more in your price range. I prefer the magpul PRO, there not plastic and there small and can be adjusted with no tool on the spot.
After they’re folded down you can almost not even tell their there.

For what it’s worth I have broken a troy sight by dropping my rifle on concrete. Not on purpose, but I did. My plastic magpuls have taken some hard knocks over the years and still remain functional. They aren’t as elegant as some and I don’t like the sight picture with the front sight but they are tough as hell.
I’m not a professional anything but I was taught how to build AR’s by one, meaning someone who has extensive combat experience with the weapon, utilizing uppers he built himself.
His rule is this: “If you are using an RDS type optic on an AR, Aimpoint, EOTech, etc. then you use fixed sights.” I remember I sent him a pics of an 11.5 with an M4s that I built that proudly wore KAC micros and he sent back a text that simply said, “I have failed…”
I immediately knew what I had done wrong, I went out to my shop and corrected the deficiency. I went with what looked more cool, instead of my build creed, which is build a weapon I would not hesitate to take into combat. In a gunfight, I would not care to call “time-outs” and flip up sights. No, I’m not in the Army anymore, and I don’t get into gunfights on a daily basis, but that is still my build creed.
I know by looking at pictures of AR’s and by reading comments in M4C that not everyone subscribes to that rule, but I do because it just makes sense.
Get the AP PRO and save up for the Troys. I use Troy on all my rifles. I bought a set of MBUS PRO a couple of weeks ago to check out, but I just don’t like them. I like my sights to lock like the Troys do. Plus, I like the HK style front sight option on the Troys.
Thank you for sharing this wisdom! I think you may have single handedly talked me into changing my mind and going with fixed irons
I agree and subscribe to this sentiment. Grab some fixed DDs or my favorite, the new scalar works sights, and the aimpoint pro and you are good to go. Only rifles that don’t have fixed sights have LPVOs with etched reticles.
Yup. I started off with DD fixed sights, they are great buis. But I have replaced them with Precision Reflex/LaRue Tactical fixed sights. I really like the PRI front sight, I usually run a LaRue rear fixed sight and the PRI front. Excellent combination for me.
But they all service the same purpose, not missing a beat in that rare circumstance your optic goes down.

my personal preference is a FSB & fixed rear using an RDS
Just my 2 cents, but I’d save up more money and get an H1 or H2 Micro over the PRO. I run the PRO on my secondary/backup, Micro on my primary. Wish I could go back and spend more on a 2nd Micro. The PRO is just too heavy and bulky for what it does. yes, I’m using the factory QR mount.
I know Larue isn’t popular given the whole rail digging thing, but given how cheap you can pick them up used these days and how easily/quickly you can remove it under stress… I love them for a RDS mount. I like running them with the lever on the side opposite the ejection port as it makes for quick and easy dump of the optic. I’d skip Larue for anything precision scope though.
I have NO issues with the Magpul plastics as they have been very durable even when banged around for me. They would be my first choice of backup sights given their durability, weight, price if they spent most of their time folded down.
I would not use the Magpul plastic rear as a full time rear sight in the up position as the ring/view sucks compared to the DD A1.5 (my fav) or other fixed rear sights.
If you need to remove that rear sight often or quickly, the Larue rear sight with lever is a great piece of kit.
Are these shipping yet? I’d like to see a review if anyone has read a good one.

Yes. They sold out of their first batch very quickly. I have a set on my sionics 11.5 sbr with a t2 and I love them. They are lighter than DD fixed sights, I like the rear peep sight better (it’s flat and not concave), and very easy to adjust. Just an excellent choice if looking for something very minimalist, light weight, but still functional as hell.

Interesting. What’s the size of the rear sight aperture?
