Troy failure

I have Troy folding front and rear BUIS on both of my main rifles. Up until today I had been completely happy with them, albeit not using them much other than zeroing then folding back down and forgetting.

While shooting today I thought I’d reconfirm zero on the BUIS, and popped them up to do so. Imagine my surprise to find that the POI was approximately 6" to the right! As I start to crank the sight back over, I notice that it’s spinning awfully freely, and I could have sworn there used to be a detent that made turning much more difficult. Sure enough, the detent is gone and only the spring remains. Two more shots and the spring is gone too. Turns out the whole bolt is loose across the sight. I’ll try to post the pics I took later.

So now I have no faith in the sights. Given their intended purpose, it strikes me that BUIS should be totally bulletproof and reliable. I’m not sure what my other options are, especially since I’ll need to replace both the front and rear folders if I want to be Troy-free.

That’s why I use fixed front sights and LT-103 rears on my guns. Troy makes a good product, I’m just not a fan of folding sights. Anything that is designed to move also increases the chance of breakage.
That said, did you use any lube on it to prevent corrosion and sticky parts syndrome?

Dern… Not very TRUST-building to have that happen…

Rmpl

I haven’t tried fixed fronts on these guns, but they both wear Compact ACOGs so fixed rears won’t work.

I had been toying with the idea of going back to Aimpoints, in which case I’d run fixed front and rears, so maybe this is the impetus I need.

Could only happen to you…

That’s rather disconcerting. I had fully intended on buying one of the Troy rear sights. Thanks for the heads up.

I don’t think it could, actually. I seem to recall reading about this happening to other people awhile back. I don’t know if there was a bad batch, how to tell if mine is from that batch, or even how old mine is for that matter.

What a shock to have a top of the line product fail like that. I have yankee hill front and rear flip sights and use them a lot and never had them fail and their not even concidered top of the line. Contatc Troy and let them know what happened, could be a freak accident or defect they don’t know about.

I will be trying to call them early next week. I may try emailing them the pictures tomorrow if I get them uploaded.

Remember this post on one of your threads… ill refresh your memory… Tell me about it… had an LMT upper(new) that got a huge gouge in the cam pin recess area(in the upper) after working the action about 20 times, had to send that back. Also had 2 lmt gas carrier keys that came loose ,one at 350 rounds the other just went loose after 4000 rounds(also the gas tube wore out ).Bought a new LMT lower and the bolt catch broke after doing a function test.Had a(new) Trijicon TA-33 go down after 300 rounds. And just this week ALL 3 of my Aimpoint COMP M4’S had gone loose after 1500 rounds. .Also 5 of my 20 order of C products SS mag’s were bad, rounds were binding up in the mag(I did the push the follower down 10 times with a ruler thing) and mags did not work in 2 of my ar’s.I just threw the mags away, is was not worth it to (me) to send them back.I feel your pain Rob…Ohh ya while im crying, I have 2 magpul CTR stocks that wont stay restricted and come loose after a few rounds have been fired lol , ill send them back someday lol. If you just had one issue with a quailty product i say give it another chance…ANYTHING made buy man can and will fail sometimes… its just the way it is … deal with it and drive on.

Huh? I don’t think I recognize any of that.

C-Products, the company I want to love… (thread title)

OK, so I’ve had problems with every CP magazine I’ve purchased, what does that have to do with this, or with burning out LMT gas tubes or CTR stocks?

Happened to my Troy rear after one weekend class. Bought it new a while back, zeroed before class, shot the class, sight was loose by Day 2. Got it home, diagnosed same thing as you, said “Fuck you Troy” and put my KAC sight back on. The KAC disassembled itself after a few years of use so I’ve ended up disassembling the Troy sight (I still had all the parts), Loctiting the hell out of the offending part, witness marking all over it and re-zeroed.

Unfortunately, I have very few rounds through that gun after that process. :frowning: And I’m still not smart enough to take instructor advice and put on fixed rears.

I was just saying that ANY QUAILTY product can fail(just giveing you examples)… as it has happend to me.Give the troy sites another chance and have them fix it or replace it.Dont lose faith in a product from a company who has a good rep. Take a Pat Rogers course or (just give it some hard use at the range) and if you have no issues then you SHOULD be GTG.

I guess you don’t know me very well.

I KNOW you take the Pat Rogers classes, that’s why i said that (i dont know when you do or what dates you take them, heck i dont know if you have one comeing up or something)I was just saying that would be a good test(as you KNOW) of your new BUIS(if you wanted troy to replace them ).That way it would help bring back some faith in the troy sites.

It’s not new. It’s been on the rifle for quite awhile, and through quite a few rounds.

The problem, and the reason for my current lack of faith in the sights (I have them on another rifle as well) is that this particular failure made apparent to me a flaw that I do not readily see a fix for.

This isn’t just a “oh, my Toyota broke down they all must be shit” situation. This is a “oh, my RX7 just broke down, now I see why rotary engines in production daily drivers are a bad idea”.

I’ll try to get the pics up tomorrow to better explain my concern. What it comes down to is that there appears to be a nut/bolt setup that I can only see locktite as a way to keep it from backing out, but the bolt needs to turn in order to adjust the site, making locktite a bit of a non-fix.

Rob,

I have two Troy rear sights. After about 8000 rounds and a few cross country plane rides, I lost the ball bearing detent on one of the sights just as you described. I figured I needed to loctite the part. I searched hardware stores for a ball bearing the correct size and could not find one. I then asked Troy for a new ball bearing.

Troy requested that I send the sight back to them. A short time later, I received a brand new rear sight. I have not had an problems with the new one, but I don’t have the high round count on it yet. I was pleased with Troy’s customer service.

I’m looking at some YHM BUIS for my rifle and wanted your input. Anyone have experience with them? $120 for the pair seems to be a good price when compared to other BUIS costing 2x that.
