I currently have a Daniel Defense Omega X 12.0 FSP rail and love it. I recently purchased a 14.5" upper with a pinned/welded flash hider. I would like to have a similar rail to the DD rail put on this one.
Is anyone using the Troy rail?
On the website they state, “The MRF’s patented mounting system reinforces the barrel nut with a sturdy clamp and anti-rotation alignment lugs.”, does anyone know how the clamp attaches to the factory barrel nut? Can I simply remove my delta ring and put the clamp on or do I have to remove the FH and FSP to do it.
Am I better off purchasing another upper and just putting another DD Omega X rail on it since I know I like that one?
This will likely be the rail I end up putting on my carbine. I like it because of its price and relative ease of installation. I planned on just cutting the delta ring, spring and handguard cap off to install it. It is likely going to be what I get with whatever Christmas cash I end up with, so I’ll post up when I do get it on there.
FWIW I prefer the Troy rails to the multitude of Daniel Defenses. I don’t think they are better or worse, I just prefer them, especially the extreme models. Of the DD I like the light rails best.
What are you basing that on? I don’t have a dog in the fight, just curious.
The machine work between the two. The DD has a more refined look/feel, not to mention the weight difference between the two.
The DD bolt-up system is much better as well. There is no indexing of the barrel nut that ahs to take place, and I feel it is much easier to acheive a perfect alignment with the upper receiver as well.
Of course the trade off is cost. I paid $165 for a 10" Troy, about $350 for a DD 12" Lite.
I do agree the Daniel defense rails feel more refined.
I’ve owned both the Troy MRF-M and DD Lite & Omega rails, all are great rails.
One factor to consider is the rail weight. I remember the Troy free-float was heavier when compared to a DD rail of the same length. It made the carbine feel barrel heavy, and slightly threw off the balance.
A 12 inch DD rail hovers around 15 ozs where the 12 inch Troy rail comes in at over 20 ozs.
what’s the old saying - “lightweight, fast, and cheap, pick any two”.
that’s the thing here. an MRF rail is hell for stout but is no lightweight. in fact it’s one of the heavier rails available but it’s cheaper than the others by a wide margin.
regardless of price, I don’t think I’d want a MRF rail longer than 9" on any gov’t weight barreled rifle. I have a 9" on my BCM gov’t middy and I’m looking for ways to lighten that as we speak…
