Tromix? 458 Socom

I have a lower receiver assembled and am thinking about topping it off with a .458 Socom upper.

Does anyone have any positive or negative experience with Tromix?

I’m a little gun-shy as I bought a “Radical” 450 bushmaster upper and went through two of them and neither would cycle a round properly.

I really don’t want to go there again.

Tromix is supposed to be good. I didn’t buy their upper but rather built mine. My biggest feeding issue was due to the magazine. Once I got that straightened out mine has run just fine.

The Lancer 458 socom mags work great and also handle 300 BO with the heavier bullets like the 220gr RN.

When it comes to 458 Socom Tromix is the only one you should be looking at.

Thanks to you both for your input.

Tromix is sort of the go-to manufacturer for all of the large bore meme calibers.

Tromix is definitely good to go! I have a 458 SOCOM upper receiver and barrel from them and it functions perfectly with my BCM lower.

From Wikipedia: “History
Prompted by the lack of power offered by the 5.56 NATO cartridge used in the M4 carbine and the M16 rifle, the .458 SOCOM came about from informal discussion of members of the special operations command, specifically Task Force Ranger’s experience that multiple shots were required to incapacitate members of the opposing force in Mogadishu during Operation Gothic Serpent. Many Somalis would chew the drug Khat all day and the effects of the drug would both curb their appetite (in a country plagued by famine) and increase their pain tolerance.[citation needed] Marty ter Weeme of Teppo Jutsu and Tony Rumore of Tromix designed the cartridge in 2000 and Tromix was contracted to build the first .458 SOCOM rifle in February 2001.”

^^ This right here! I have a Tromix 375 Socom (458 necked down to 375) that I bought used locally. While working up a load for it I called the contact phone number on the Tromix website and it went straight to Tony Rumore’s phone. He was grilling on the patio at the time but still answered every question I had. He took the time to talk when he could just as well said to call back when he was in the office. He is a stand up guy that knows his stuff.

I have a Tromix .458. Works great.
You need to load your own ammunition, it’s expensive.

Reloading isn’t an issue. I load all my own ammo and have more powder than I know what to do with…Going to have to get some brass and .458 boolets.

I stumbled upon the 458 socom forum I didn’t’ know existed and ya’ll, of course, are correct. Tromix is the gold standard for .458 socom and RRA is a close second.

Truth!

Tromix is supposed to be the best option. No personal experience. I keep thinking about a .458 (and a .300BLK, and a .30 AR) but then… “SQUIRREL!!!” (In the form of NODS, PEQ, tax stamps, etc.) and that’s as far as I get.

Tromix is the best. Tony is very knowledgeable with big bore calibers and he will take the time to talk to you if you have a problem. He stands behind his products.
The SBR is the way to go. The 458 is still loud suppressed.

Tromix for sure. Tony was instrumental to the development of the cartridge and the guns to run it.

I have a Tromix 375 socom and it works great, will advice you to go for Tromix .

Just ordered my 12" .458 SOCOM Lightweight Tromix upper. Thanks to all for the input on this one.

Just surpassed 1k rounds fired with my Tromix upper. It’s runs like a greased pig. Super reliable and haven’t had any barrel/bolt related failures.

I did have a spell where It was short stroking. Finally traced that to a leaking gas key due to one sheared bolt. Resealed, replaced bolts and it was up and running. Carrier was BCM

I know Tromix has a good rep but do they make any barrels with a twist other than 1/14 which is best for heavier bullets? I know Wilson Combat does a 1/22 which is supposed to be better for bullets up to 350 grains, for non suppressed use that seems to be a better option.

For any who might be interested Opticsplanet has a few Wilson upper build kits for sale with free 2 day shipping both 1/14 and 1/22.

I have extensive experience with the .458 and have worked with Tony and Marty on several projects. Tromix makes a 8” and 10.5” 1:10 twist in .458 S for using with the super heavies, meaning over 500 gr. I have barrels in 1:10, 1:14, 1:18, and 1:22. The 1:14 will stabilize any bullet, sub or super, to 500 gr. I saw no increase in anything with the 1:10, even with 525 gr. cast, but I would certainly recommend that twist with bullets over 500 gr. and subsonic. My 1:22 is not as accurate with any bullet at any speed as with the 1:14 and 1:18, and the 1:22 showed definite instability with 500 gr. bullets at 100 yards even though they were super sonic loads. That’s the only .458 barrel I have that does not impress me, and I have them from 6.750” to 28 13/16” long. That 16” 1:22 just does not cut it even though it’s on a super premium blank.
