I am thinking about picking up a Trijicon RMR RM01. My thoughts are to run it on an AR or use it on an AK. For the AK I am leaning towards the BP-02 mount and have no clue as far as what mount to get for the AR. I know that most people would recommend the Ultimak rail but I am not sure if the RMR can take the heat. Anyone have any pics of a RMR/BP-02 on an AK?

I used to be a Supervisor in the Trijicon ACOG Department. Now I’m a Military and Law Enforcement Equipment Retailer.
The new Trijicon RMR (Ruggedized Miniature Reflex) sights are extremely rugged and durable. It’s a true “second generation sight” that is vastly improved over the Trijicon TRD (Red Dot) sights.
Some of the benefits:
You’ll need to make sure your rail is either Weaver or Picatinny Rail compatible.
If it’s a Picatinny Rail you’ll need the RMR plus one of the following mounts:
RM33
RM34
If it’s a Weaver Rail you’ll need the RMR plus the following mount:
RM34W
If you’re talking about recoil…no need to worry there. The RMR sights are made for heavy use on military style weapons.
As to the “heat factor” I don’t know the exact specs of how “hot” the sight can get. I do know that the RMR will have similar heat tolerance to other sights out there from Aimpoint, EOTech, etc. If your rail gets RED HOT after firing you might want to contact Trijicon directly to figure out exact heat tolerances.

Are there any QD mount options available yet? I’ve not found any on Larue’s site. I thought I’d seen a reference to ADM offering one but did not find it mentioned on their site either.

I don’t think there are any QD mounts for the RMR sights yet. The 3 major players I look at for good quality QD mounts is ARMSMounts.com, GGGaz.com, and LarueTactical.com (we offer ARMS and GGG, but Larue won’t sell through retailers).
(There are always some smaller outfits that make aftermarket mounts. Some of them are pretty good, but we can’t be sure of the “military / law enforcement toughness” with the smaller outfits. So we just look at the majors.)
I do see that the above 3 major players are offering Aimpoint Micro QD mounts, and I imagine that within 6-8 months they will come out with RMR QD mounts (as it takes time to realize that the new optics are big sellers and time to design / manufacture the new mounts).
I’m actually kinda surprised that Trijicon doesn’t come out with it’s “own” line of QD mounts. I think they would make a killing. I know they have the design capability, manufacturing capability, and they have a whole department of super smart engineers).

LaRue has one, though which one it is escapes me at the moment. It’s used to mount the RMR atop the forthcoming MDO. I’ll have to look it up
MILWAR, can you explain why Trijicon has not made the RMR with their 14 MOA chevron reticule? IMO this is the best reticule pattern they have.

My first choice for mounting the RMR would be to use the AK mount that KVAR sells which would mount the optic over the receiver. I know that in that area heat would not be an issue. My concern is, if mounting it like that does not work out I would have to run it on an Ultimak. If I remember correctly the T1’s temp range is only a bit higher than the RMR and the T1 holds up great on the Ultimak. I’d hate to spend $500 on an optic only to cook it after a few hundred rounds.

In our case, it’s used to mount it to the Machinegun Day Optic, and may be removed. Looks perfect for, say, a 1 o’clock offset mount in conjunction with a fixed-magnification primary optic, which makes a helluva lot more sense than sticking it on top of anything.
I’m not 100% sure, but I think it has to do with the miniature size of the optic. Just from knowing how those are built it takes a lot of sophisticated engineering to get that small package to work. Trying to get the reticle to be a specific “shape” might not be possible in a sight that small.
You can be rest assured that if Trijicon “can” do it, they’re probably already working on it. They’ve got a couple of different reticle types on their larger Reflex sights.

If the Aimpoint T-1 can handle it, the RMR can probably handle it too. With the Aimpoint T-1 the “interior” of the optic is really close to the rail. With the RMR you’ll have rail mount inbetween the RMR and the rail (the RM33 is the lowest, but it still adds around .25 to .50 inch height to the setup). So you’ll have the “mount” as a buffer to absorb and diffuse heat.
I can’t make any guarantees though. Extreme heat with any optic is usually not a good idea…lol

I have shot a TA 01 with a Mini Red dot sight on it. Not a fan. You just have to shoot it to understand.
the ACOG is great. your eye relief and cheek to stock is the same every time. If your add the red dot sight to the top, you have a different feel to how you shoot. Shooting is muscle memory. Same way you bring the but stock to your shoulder , align your sights up to the target, same way squeeze the trigger. You don’t get this with the red dot sight on your weapon.
Alot of folks don’t know you can shoot the ACOG with both eyes open. you can do CQB looking through your ACOG with both eyes open, it takes a lil bit of training. I suggest you go with an EOTech!
