SO I’ve finally finished my FAL build. Its an argentine kit on an imbel with a full size flash suppressor. Its basically an old school FAL. The thing is 48 inches long, which is about 20 inches longer than my aug.
After much thought, i’m going to go with the trijicon 1-4 with the green triangle. Here is my question: which mount/rings should I use. QD would be ideal but not critical. I want to keep it as low on the gun as possible so I’m leaning away from the Larue SPR mounts. Any suggestions would be great.
I really like the Warne quick detach rings. They come in different heights, so figure out which is best for your application. I believe they are the best value when it comes to quick detach rings. Mine has always returned close enough to zero that I haven’t noticed any movement. Many complain that they are more difficult to mount than other rings, but you only do it once.
I used a pair of the Warne rings to mount up a IOR M2 4x scope on my Saiga-308 w/ Krebs scope mount. Although I am about to switch it to a M1A Scout that I picked up not to long ago. It really works well. Also note that the QD levers can be repositioned even when it torqued down. So you can move them to get them out of the way.
The Larue SPR mount puts it up too high on a FAL. In fact, the SPR is really intended to work on AR style platforms. For the FAL, rings work better for getting it down lower. You could use the Larue QD rings, but they are pretty spendy. Stay away from the ARMS as they are both expensive and known for loosening up.
Not to jack the thread but if it’s a full size FAL, why limit the range you can shoot it with a scope that won’t allow any hold over and lacks any BDC capability?
Use an ACOG set up for 7.62 NATO or any decent scope that allows you to shoot out to at least 600 yds, 1,000 would be even better! Think either BDC or MIL dot.
gotta argue with you guys here on the a.r.m.s. rings…i had a pair on my old fn fal for a couple years…the small 30mm ones work great on the fal…anyhow they never loosened or lost zero even after taking the scope of and on numerous times…i have a new fal now and i’m going to buy another set
SO I followed the advice here and went with some warne medium rings. Mounted them to a DSA mount. The 1-4 is awesome on a full size FAL. plenty of eye relief. Very fast at 1 and 2 power. Super bright. Great optic for this type of gun.
In terms of why the 1-4… Couple of reasons: my experience with FALs is that the are a 2 MOA rifle at best (although this one I just built seems a good deal tighter then that). Given that mil surp ammo is 2-3 moa ammo I consider the rifle to be a 300 yard rifle. If I want to shoot farther than that, I have other tools in the shed. Most of the shooting I do (hunting, training… ) is inside 200 yards. the 1-4 with the FAL is great for that.
