It’s not clear whether Travis County or the Austin City Council, which might consider a similar measure, could legally ban gun shows — county attorneys briefed commissioners on the matter during closed session Tuesday — but the discussions have drawn the attention of state Attorney General Greg Abbott, who this week said via Twitter: “If Austin or Travis Co. try to ban gun shows they better be ready for a double-barreled lawsuit.”

I hate hippies in texas. Gun shows not allow in texas should get you a free pass to move to California all expenses paid.

Hippies? Gosh, I haven’t seen hippies here in years and years, let alone other places in Texas.

You must mean liberal progressives. Yes, Austin has plenty of those, many of which moved here from California. IIRC, Dallas and Houston both have mayors that are Democrats, no? What does that say about the voters in both cities?

They are talking about banning gunshows in the Austin of the East, Asheville NC as well.

Hey don’t get my wrong, Houston is full of hippies. And yes I mean liberal progressives, but prefer to call them hippies. I believe Houston tried something like this in 2000 as well.

I really wasnt trying to lay blame to any particular city. In reality our cities are bastions for this socialist movement we are seeing.

I saw a voting map of Texas per county and was shocked.

Pretty much what I would have thought.

Edited to add: I thought it was significant that here in the bastion of liberal Texas the County Judges (called county commissioners most other places), only one of which is Republican, are backing away from banning gun shows on County property. I take this as a good sign.

and the entire nation.

The trouble is that most of those red counties are not very densely populated, hence the lost election.

Absolutely. I just found it interesting on a land mass basis.

Austin is liberal because most of the workers live outside the city limits and don’t vote in Austin.

I live about 2 miles from the city and county borders, and my district voted over 70% for John Carter (R TX31) in the last election. Our city council and every other rep are all Republicans that I know of.

The lesson is every big city is liberal. That’s where the concentration of welfare and deviants live. I lost a job (quit) in Austin because the customer (Mexican) I was supposed to install stuff in their house decided to hot box the room I was working in. I stepped outside, called the manager, and he told me to press on. I told him he could come pick up his crap and went home. Im for drug legalization but doesn’t mean I want to work in a haze of pot smoke.

Agree, but it isn’t just the “concentration of welfare and deviants” in Austin, and other large cities as well. It is the total of all of the democrat voting whites, hispanics, blacks, and others.

In the 2012 election, all of Travis County voted: 36% Romney and 60%Obama. Austin’s population is roughly 80% of Travis County’s.

According to the 2010 Census, the racial composition of Austin was:
White: 68.3%
Hispanic or Latino: 35.1%
African American: 8.1%
Asian: 6.3%
American Indian: 0.9%
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander: 0.1%
Two or More Races: 3.4%

But again, the point of my OP was to take some solace in the fact that our majority democrat county commission was backing away from banning gun shows on county property.
