Travelling through NY and NJ: what to do w/ AR and mags

I’m moving from one of the northeast’s People’s Republiks to PA in the next few days. My journey will have me on the interstate the entire way. I know that there’s supposed to be federal law protecting carrying interstate travel with an unloaded and inaccessible gun but I’m told that NY and NJ routinely ignore this law. I have one AR lower and upper (minus the barrel…not finished yet) and eight 30 rd mags that I’ve packed and taped up. Would I be okay to keep them in the trunk for the trip to PA or should I ship them?

So you don’t have a AR…

Ship the mags.

Don’t speed and make sure your car has no issues like lights out and your back window and mirror are not blocked and you inspection is good, nothing hanging from your rear view nothing on the dash board and dont brake the law and I dont see how any of this will be an issue.

I have never once been asked if I had any weapons in the car but dont look suspicious either. Be polite if stopped but as long as your not doing anything wrong why would you be?

Murphy is a motherfucker.

18 USC § 926A - Interstate transportation of firearms

When I had to drive through Illinois with a standard capacity Glock 19, I carefully followed the Illinois State Police’s online pamphlet about Safe Passage. I was unable to find a similar publication from the NYSP, but I imagine they would be a safe place to get advice.

This.

My car is old and I don’t know if it’s going to break down and have to get towed, though I did just get it inspected and it was fine. I also don’t know if I’m going to get into an accident because of some idiot. I always follow the speed limit on those particular roads since they are heavily patrolled but my worry is that shit happens.

You could always ship the magazines and the upper.

Just follow the law, and go on the state’s website and print out the law on out of state transportation, and keep it in the car, or in the case where the firearm is.

Go around.

That’s because the pieces of shit in NYS do not care about federal law that allows transport through their state, they don’t care if it’s unloaded and disassembled for that matter. If the OP gets pulled over and he’s found to have pretty much any firearm or mag, he’s screwed. NY has railroaded many good people on fucked up unconstitutional trumped up charges.

If your stopped for some MVC violation the Officer would need a search warrant to search a locked compartment such as a trunk of a vehicle which is outside of your immediate area of control. They may use a drug dog for a walk around but no matter what the Officer tells you do not consent to a search.

I would disassemble the magazines and have each group of parts in their own boxes, springs in one box, followers in another, bodies in another and so on and have everything taped close securely.

As to the upper receiver it is not considered a firearm without the lower receiver so if I was worried about a AWB violation I would over night the lower receiver to a friend or family member near your new location.

He can’t unless he took a boat out to sea, NY separated New England from the rest of the country.

You paint with a broad bush calling all NYS L/E’s “Pieces of Shit” when many are very pro- 2A supporters. There are bad apples in every profession which make the group as a whole look bad but to lump all into a single category is unjustified.

The easiest way is to just mail it to yourself at your new location. It’s a long gun so it can go USPS priority mail.
I’ve done it a few times when traveling with a rifle just wasn’t convenient for whatever reason. The last time I did it I mailed an M1A to myself that I had stored at a friend’s house out of state and while I was up there I sent it home.

I’d go so far as to lock these items in hard sided containers, in the trunk. Never, ever, under any circumstance, consent to any search. Ever…

I’d ship it. In my opinion the piece of mind would be worth the expense.

They’re just following orders, it’s the wacky fuck politicians and the lemmings that vote for them who are the problem. I wasn’t bashing LE, I was stating what is because of that state’s wacky laws, so if I was to bash anyone it’s the politicians, a major reason I fled that state and will never move back (probably will never visit either).

Don’t ever consent to a search. Per a NJ SWAT officer I trained with not too long ago … in NJ, a search warrant is required to search your vehicle, provided you didn’t give consent.
