Not secure enough to stop thieves, but it’s enough to put the wife’s (and my) mind at ease.
i have a few center of mass boxes for the car.
what i like about it is that it is fairly inexpensive, and has a steel cable that can be tethered to a car seat.
what i don’t necessarily like about it is that you need a key to get in.
also, it is not that hard for somebody to cut the cable and simply pry the box open. i did it with a box when i misplaced my key.
in short, the center of mass storage units are fine if you want to prevent the theft of your guns or valuables from the casual thief. it is not a bad thing to have if you have to secure your weapon if you are visiting an off-limits CCW type of place for a relatively brief time.
somebody who is determined to make off with your stuff will easily defeat it … however, it is better than nothing.
My main problem with the COM setup is vehicle specific. There is no room under either my driver or passenger front seat, so it’s under the back seat on the driver’s side. This means that I have to get out of the car to use it.
It may, however, prove to be useful for traveling so that I can secure the box to a bed frame or similar.
They do make a Console Vault that is specific to my vehicle but I’m not sure I’m keeping the truck long enough to make this work. I really like the one they have for the Tacoma though and if I get that truck I’ll surely be getting a CV to go in it.
As to having the gun on me at all times, it’s not feasible. I’m not one of these “live in fear 24/7 and have no life” types. I go to bars where I can’t carry, I go to the beach and in the ocean where I can’t carry, etc. If I lived somewhere that I thought I couldn’t do this I’d move.
my glock 26 goes with me into the ocean on a regular basis. it gets wet and sandy and still goes kaboom.
wait, glock and kaboom shouldn’t really be in the same sentence. that ain’t right.
i forgot to mention …
v-line makes a nice simplex mechanical (no electronics) gun safe. for long guns too.
these are fairly sturdy and offer more protection than center of mass products.
OK. The beach… I’ll give you. You can’t really wrap your pistol in a towel and hope it’ll still be there when you get back.
But Bars? Come on, man. I carry ALL KINDS of places where I’m not supposed to. You live in Florida! Get a Sonny Crockett outfit and a shoulder holster, and MAN UP!! 
The first such device I purchased was a DAC SportSafe from Wal-Mart (from their web site). Reasonably cheap and sturdy. The inner padding is not glued on very well, which a little rubber cement will fix, but otherwise very functional.
I needed a 2nd box so I bought a GunVault 2000 Deluxe, thinking it would be better quality than the DAC model.
It wasn’t. The lock mechanism is much flimsier, the buttons are harder to press, and they CANNOT be pressed rapidly because the input is just not read from the buttons quickly enough. i.e., if you push the buttons too fast, it will not pick up on some of the presses and will think you mis-entered your combination. The result being that you have to deliberately fail the code and start over.
I also came home once to find that it had reset itself to the factory default combination for no reason whatsoever (despite being plugged into AC with batteries to back it up).
If I could do it all over again I’d get a V-Line box, and in fact I intend to do so sometime soon, but the DAC box has proven to be quite satisfactory. It also has a carry handle on top.
Both do advertise that they come with a shelf so you can put stuff into it in two levels (i.e., two pistols, or whatever) but I find that this leaves too little room for you to cram your hand in in an emergency, so I just use the boxes for 1 pistol each (although the GV is a bit roomier).
+1 on the DAC electronic safe. i have two; one travels with us whenever we go on trips.
my 3 y.o. already knows the eddie the eagle spiel, but the wife + i feel better knowing that my firearm is secured [when i’m not wearing it] but we have relatively quick access to it in most situations.
You can always get a luggage pad lock and lock up a double zipper bag, or one of the lockable holsters that are made for airline pilots.
You disarmed before you went in? That’s interesting. They searched bags the last time I was there, not people.
Takes all kinds, I guess. When my wife and I went a few months ago, I carried my normal EDC (1911, 2 spare mags, A2 light, knife).
I don’t live in fear either. However, ask Psywar1_0 about what happened the last time I went in somewhere without a gun because it was just for a minute, and I figured I wouldn’t need it.
(Here’s a hint: If that little voice says to you, “You’re just being crazy. You don’t need a gun in there”, it’s time to add a couple of extra magazines and a BUG.)
First, to have one at all times. It is no good if you left it at home.
Put it in the holster in the nightstand usually. Or in a bag next to the bed.
