I am flying to JFK tomorrow for work in a few places on the east coast. I will be working in states other than NY, and I would like to bring a handgun with me. What are my options? The most obvious problem to me is checking in on my way back home. Where else could I be legally vulnerable?
Looks like a legal morass to me. From what little I’ve read and heard, a person can pass through NYC with a handgun as long as it’s unloaded, locked up, and not readily accessible and that person can’t hang around NYC for any period of time. Basically sounds like you could drive through NYC with a pistol locked up in the trunk and make a quick stop for gas, but that’s about it.
Appears to me if you’ve got a handgun in your possession (like in your suitcase in your motel room, locked up or no) you’re violating the law.
I’d also like to hear from someone who has actually navigated the ins and outs of this situation.
ETA: I just ran across this thread about New York gun laws on another forum (http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=332344) and it seems like even the people that live (or lived) in New York and have/had gun permits can’t agree on what the laws are, particularly when you throw NYC into the mix. What a confusing mess.
My quick takeaway is “the juice ain’t worth the squeeze.”
