As the title suggests, I am looking for a recommendation on handgun training (CHL and beyond) in San Antonio, TX. There are several options, but I am not from here so it is hard for me to evaluate them. In addition, many of the websites do not seem to list the background of the instructor, etc.
Best CHL instructors in the area are www.lonestarhandgun.com. Wife and I got our CHL’s from them a few years back. Now that they have a range, it’s even a better setup. You will leave class with everything needed to apply, including applications, fingerprints, etc.
Thanks. I’ve done the application online and had my fingerprints taken last weekend. I am just trying to decide where is the best choice in terms of taking the class.
I probably misspoke when I said they were the “best CHL instructors”, as I have no personal reference point of others. However, I know of no other one-stop CHL instructors who have the classroom, range, fingerprint machine, take/provide your photos, AND provide you with any/all paperwork including an addressed envelope to mail it all in, all at one location.
To top it all off, almost everyone who works there are vets, including several folks missing limbs. Great folks all!
Kelley Venden From Criterion Tactical is in San Antonio. His website is www.criteriontactical.com Kelly is absolutely outstanding. His background is Rangers, Delta. Then interestingly, he trained the Air Marshals after 9/11. Now he trains troops deploying overseas. I give Kelly my highest possible recommendation. He was a massive help in fixing my pistol shooting. Myself and another shooter were on the line at the NEShooters Summit and Kelly was acting as an assistant instructor for Mike Seeklander. Kelly walked by me, stopped for a maybe a minute, fixed my thumbs and moved down the line to the next shooter and fixed him. Both of us were astonished at the results after following his instructions. Both our groups tightened up considerably. The guy next to me complimented me on my shooting. I said “I don’t understand what’s going on. I’m not this good. I just listened to Kelly.” With Criterion Tactical the training is relevant. Relevancy is very big with Kelly. For instance, in a gunfight frequently the hand holding the weapon is hit and disabled. With Kelly, you are going to get plenty of “other strong hand” practice to continue the fight. There are going to be lots of opportunities to work barriers. Relevancy is key to what Kelly teaches. Kelly is absolutely the best I’ve trained with at time management. I got more of a class with him than a lot of the other instructors with whom I’ve trained. You will come out of a class with Kelly a lot more confident than when you started.
