I’ve been browsing for a little while now and haven’t really found much for training in the Minnesota area. There is QSI but the link isn’t working to their site. Anybody dealt with them before? My friend and I are looking to take our first carbine class with a reputable crew within reasonable driving distance of MN. The closer the better. Also, I don’t think I can really afford more than $500… the cheaper the better as well (student loans and vacations are a bitch:shout:)
In the last two years, in Crow Wing County, we’ve had Larry Vickers, Jeff Gonzales (twice) and Louis Awerbuck. In addition Greg Sullivan (Defensive Edge) runs courses a couple of times a year outside of Princeton. In another year or so, there will be a 50 yard indoor tactical range here and I’m guessing that will spawn at least a few local courses.
Great… thanks for the info. I checked on the Larry vickers stuff last night but didn’t see anything coming up yet. Hopefully I missed it. Ill check on those other couple leads, thank you.
These are the guys my buddy is thinking about us going to for basic carbine training. You guys heard of them? The website says they’re Recognized as regionally endorsed instructor of the larry vickers shooting method so I am thinking they must be alright? Any thoughts? They do have a couple cheesy pictures on their site but who doesn’t like half naked women? When I get home Sunday I can look into the other options as well.
I’ve not heard of them, but that doesn’t mean anything. I’d be more likely to recommend Greg Sullivan (Defensive Edge) simply because I’ve taken courses from him and can attest that he runs a good course. I don’t know what his course schedule is.
I emailed Jeff Gonzales to see what his training schedule looked like and to see if he was coming to MN in 2012. His website does not show him coming this year. Larry Vickers classes are (not surprisingly) full if they are near here. I also sent him an email to see if he was coming to MN at all. I sent a message to Louis Awerbuck as well. I also sent a message to a few other people and will update this thread when I hear back.
Almost forgot, Greg Sullivan’s website still shows 2011 dates. I’ll send him a message to see what he says.
From Trident Concepts:
“There is a course scheduled in Brainerd, MN from October 9th to the 11th. Check back on the website in about a month or so and it will show up on the training schedule.”
From Larry Vickers:
“Nothing right now
Best bet is to watch my website”
We are in the middle of our winter training schedule, lots of armorer courses all over the country at the moment. We should be releasing our spring/summer training calendar in the next 2 weeks. For Minnesota, we will have a Tactical Carbine Course, Urban Tactics Course, and Gunfighting From and Around Vehicles Course on the calendar, among our Alumni Training Events (1-day).

Greg Sullivan “Sully”
SLR15 Rifles
Defensive Edge Training
I now realize that link is under construction. He also sent this: facebook.com/timmtraining
that one does work. They have a one day beginners class in Brainerd may 5 tentatively.
I would like to. My brother took the TRICON courses offered in Brainerd the last two years and had nothing but good to say about them. Hopefully I will be free that weekend.
Just an update for people paying attention to this thread…
I decided on the following course: http://controlledchaosarms.com/
in Iowa for a couple reasons. The first being that, before I began looking for a class, I decided to take one with a buddy. This is the one he could make between the couple this spring. Second, it starts with the very basics such as maintenance and zeroing. I already “know” these but I’m sure I still can learn a lot about them. If I didn’t choose this one, I would take http://www.timmtraining.com/home/welcome.html
They both seem to deal with the same material, but Timm Training is closer to me (and a little cheaper). I’ll try to take good notes and post a review but no guarantees on the quality of the review. I’m a still pretty new to the tactical aspects of firearms.
Edit: the course I’m taking is the basic carbine course.
