Traded for an FN SCAR at the Fun show

As luck/providence would have it, at the gun show I ran into a guy that wanted to unload or trade an unfired SCAR for a Colt 6920 and cash. I have more Colts than I know what to do with, so it was a no brainer. I asked him why he was trading, and he said he read on the internet that the SCAR wasn’t a good gun, and how SOCOM was ditching it and going back to the M4. Far be it from me to convince him otherwise.

The combined value of what I paid and traded is far short of SCAR market value, so I can easily flip it for a profit. I am undecided for now though.

I’ll write more about it tomorrow, for now, enjoy the pics

I can understand when folks are forced to use web as a sole source of info, such as in situations when object in question is not available. That dude had SCAR in his HANDS, yet it sounds like he went with internet over personal opinion:rolleyes:.
I see that handle is reversed to the right side, maybe he couldn’t get used to it…
Anyway, nice catch, was it Crossroads show?

Nice trade!

in my OPINION from my personal experience and that of SOME (not all) of the guys i work with the scar system was a great idea that could use some refining. there are a few things with the system that quite frankly…suck. although the scar heavy is nice in that it’s a 7.62 caliber in a light, compact package (which is better than the extremely front heavy EBR) there are some reliability and ergonomic issues that make me and others shy away from it. i know this will sound like a broken record but i’d carry a 416 over a scar 16. just my thoughts. but more on the subject of your trade…sounds like you got a great deal! I would still make that trade in a heartbeat given current value of the scar. Hope you enjoy it.

Yes, Crossroads.

And I have met MANY people who sell or trade off unused gear because of something written by an “expert” on the internet. You wont find me complaining. I’ll take as many good deals as I can stumble across.

I know I am risking to derail this thread, but what kind of reliability issues have you seen?

Someone was an idiot, and you took advantage of it!

Good job!

Give yourself a pat on the back.

Regardless of how you feel about that SCAR, that was a great grab. Can still make a buck on it, it’s a good deal - nice job!

Good job.

I hope he reads this thread.

I’m curious to hear some range reports.

[Someone was an idiot, and you took advantage of it!]

AMEN!!!

Sounds like you got a great deal. I was able to shoot 2 mags through one about 2 hours ago. The egros were excellent. Smooth trigger and very easy to manipulate. It was lighter than I thought it would be. The muzzle break made it very controllable, with very little perceived recoil, but the folks to my left and right thought it was loud as hell. Head shots were a breeze with the 4 x Acog. He got it locally for $2500.00. The jacked up thing is, I was just in that gun shop a last week getting some sights mounted and it wasn’t there.:frowning:

Pm me if you have q’s bout the scar. Don’t wanna derail the thread. Again, awesome trade and enjoy it!

I’ll bet the reason the charging handle was reversed is because you would bang your knuckles on the eotech’s tightening knob whenever you use it.

My friend just got one and he ran into this issue wiht the newer Eotech, so he took it off and installed his older Eotech that did not have the knob on the lefthand side.

I got to fire a few hundred rounds through it side by side with my HK416. I will post my thoughts when I get a chance.

Now you just need to SBR that SACR!

What’s the barrel length on that wicked looking XCR? Who cut the barrel, and did you have to adjust the gas port?

Two concerns I have about the SCAR is not having access to spare parts, and the lack of factory SBR barrels. I wont cut my current barrel unless I know 100% I can have it replaced within a week.

SCAR barrels are fairly complex as well, so I’m not sure if their will be any after market solutions

We’ll see. Obviously the SCAR is still new. I’m hoping FN will have more SCAR news at SHOT, so I will sit on the SCAR at least till then. If there is even a hint of factory SBR barrels, I’ll have SBR papers filed the next day.

What’s the barrel length on that wicked looking XCR? Who cut the barrel, and did you have to adjust the gas port?

That’s a 10.5" XCR barrel. A local machinist did it for me. The shortest factory option is 11" on a standard length upper. The gas port had to be opened and I added a 6.8 gas dial. It will run mil-spec ammo fine. It gets a touch picky with low pressure steel ammo if the gas setting is below 4.

Yep, interference with optics has been noted since early on, although I assume in this case the Eo pictured belongs to variablebinary, not seller. The QRP2 mount for Aimpoint is a no go too. You need a very lean mount with SCAR, or move optic for/aft of charging handle slot.

I’d be interested to hear comparison with 416, esp. in recoil/muzzle control department.

The SCAR is the smoothest shooting rifle I have ever fired. I was able to put a number of rounds in fullauto and semiauto through a 416 a few years ago at the Silencertest shoot in Georgia. The 416 has a snappier/sharper recoil impulse than a standard direct impingement AR15/M16. It does not have subjectively more recoil than a direct impingement rifle, just a sharper impulse than the 416. The SCAR most definitely subjectively has a smoother feeling recoil impulse. Double and triple taps with my SCAR (unsuppressed with an AAC blackout suppressor mount flash hider on the muzzle) result in the Aimpoint’s dot barely moving from the target at 25 yards. The recoil impulse on the SCAR is so minimal it is almost uncanny. I have not yet had a chance to shoot it long range or for accuracy, so I cannot yet speak to its attributes in these areas.

I fired the SCAR a little today just to make sure it worked. It’s very smooth shooting. It has a very even push. Recoil builds up slow, and levels off nicely with sights still on target

The 416 has an abrupt sharp snap, and a very mechanical feel. All short stroke piston AR15’s that I have fired feel this way. I’ve fired both the 10.5" and 14.5" 416 models. Both had more recoil than my SCAR and XCR. But then again we are talking 5.56, so either way it wont kill the shooter
