National Review article on it, not sure that the sea change that the author postulates will happen, but grin worthy.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN ?
“molan labe”
It’s greek (latin?) for “come and take them”.
Earth and water.

Two things - why couldn’t the women’s breasts be bigger? ![]()
Secondly, why would they put those Persians in their own well for drinking?
Okay, I lied, one last thing. Why didn’t the (captain?) guy that leaped off of Leonidas’ back throw his spear at Xerxes? Probably because he isn’t supposed to die, but still it’d make more sense to take a flying leap to aim at the king rather than some stooge right in front of him.
I saw it on Wednesday and I was surprised by how graphically violent it was. I had my sister and her two 14 year old twin sons with us, and at first I was concerned about having them there.
Now that I’ve been able to think about it a while, I’m glad I took them because of the underlying message. Unfortunately, I think the message was lost on the twins, both because of their age and because they are too egocentric to be concerned over bigger issues. I will discuss the concepts of liberty and freedom with them soon and relate it to the movie.
I think I’ll buy the DVD when it is available. Visually it was a masterpiece, with a “look” that was something like a cross between “Gladiator” and “Sin City.” The performances were first rate, and the women were amazing … strong and feminine at the same time. As far as breasticle size goes, I’ll go for quality over quantity any day! The producers of this movie have mastered converting a graphic novel/comic book to the big screen, in my opinion.
I realize that historically Xerxes wasn’t suppose to die, but all four of us were on the edges of our seats hoping for him to get killed in a painful way. We now refer to the character in the movie as “the giant h_m_” when discussing it. Please excuse my use of a semi-pejorative slang word above (redacted), but it fits.
One question I had . . . were all of the actors playing the Spartans in that kind of shape, or were some of them wearing prosthetic muscles??
Here is a good exlantion of “molon labe” from the Firing Line (it’s the motto there).
MOLON LABE!!!
I got out to see it.
At first I was a little worried that they made a bizarre fictionalization of one of the most significant military battles of all time and ruin the powerful story. They preserved the story, but this wasn’t made to be a historically accurate film in most regards. I’ve always liked Frank Miller’s artwork, so seeing a full length movie in his style is always fun. It had the same delightfully dark violence of sin city. I also enjoyed the number of scenes that were from the book’s illustrations.
I would have liked to have seen full armor hoplite phalanx formations, but that wouldn’t have been in the style of the movie or book.
I just had to laugh every time the queen mentioned fighting for freedom and all that junk when it is well known they had slaves and Spartan warriors probably could be no where the caliber they were if they didn’t have slaves.
Definitely not historically accurate by any means but it was a fun movie to watch.
Will be when you take them out to shoot.![]()
The USA had slaves in 1776, perhaps we should just laugh at those silly founding father’s ideas too.

Here is what the Iranian’s are saying. First the liberal socialists dislike the movie and now the Persian Mooslims hate it. Only confirms my opinion that it is a great movie !

Reporter: “Tonight, IRINN commentary also sheds more light on the conspiracy behind the screening of this anti-culture Hollywood film.”
Voiceover: "The screening of the movie ‘300,’ which has depicted war between the Persians and the Greeks, using an unreal and fabricated story, is facing a wave of protests and criticism by Iranians both inside and outside the country. Warner Bros., which belongs to the famous and rich American Jew, is the company that has made the movie.
"This movie, which is totally against Persian culture and civilization, could be considered a production by Zionists and a group of American extremists.
"The film ‘300’ shows the historical war between Persians, at the time of King Xerxes, with the Spartans. The director wrongly depicts the Persians as being violent and warmongers. This film is a complete distortion of history. It shows the Spartans, who were warmongers and racists and violent, as peace lovers, and the Persians as uncivilized – which is nothing but a lie.
"In addition to distortion of history, the Zionist Warner Company is also pursuing cultural and political objectives by producing such a film which has a very shallow script. From the cultural point of view, the Zionists and the elements affiliated to the U.S. have tried to launch a propaganda front against ancient and historical roots of Iranians, and the hasty production of this film is an indication of its propaganda aspect. But the political intentions of Warner have been more important than anything else.
“This film tries to paint a violent image of Persians who are against peace in today’s world, in order to increase the international political pressure on Iran. This is while films should be made of crimes committed by the Americans, throughout history, all around the world, and it should be shown what the so-called civilized Zionists and Americans are doing today with human rights and humanity.”
This film is a complete distortion of history.
Nuh uh! The Persians really had saw-bladed monsters, Xerxes really was 8 feet tall and travelled on a giant throne protected by an army of wrinkle faced orc immortals!
The bigger the fuss, the better the movie. I remember enjoying Borat and that pissed off a lot of people and countries ![]()
After hearing that this movie was based on a comic book, I didn’t want to see it. Despite being based on a comic book, it was good.
Glad I saw it. Once it is out on DVD, I’ll be ready to see it again.
Loved it.
It better come out on HD DVD! It was MADE for the big screen.
For those of you who want a more historical accounting of the battle of Thermopylae, I’d HIGHLY recommend you read “Gates of Fire”, by Steven Pressfield.
That may take a while! One of them has been “ready” for quite a while, but the other may never be able to connect actions with consquences or anything beyond his own immediate desires well enough to trust on the range.
A few years I started drilling them on safety rules and even giving them simple written exams where they had to list all of the four basic safety rules, then they had to explain them to me in their own words aloud. After that, I let them handle a .308 from which I’d removed the bolt. One did fine, and the other pointed it directly at me almost immediately . . . end of lesson.
Since then, behavior issues have resulted in losing any chance to go shooting over and over . . . I am not optimistic.
That is why I think the lessons of “300” will be lost on that twin, regardless of how well I can explain it to him.
What I will probably do is take them individually, preferably with another buddy to whom they may be more attentive. I know the one would be fine with me alone, but the other … well, it’s kind of like a father teaching his wife how to drive.
They are doing really well in school though. The “good” twin always did, but now they are both on the high honor roll each term as freshmen at North Central in Indianapolis. That’s a good sign. Maybe I can find a way to challenge them to do some research on the phrase “molon labe” and the Battle of Thermopylae. After seeing the movie, they may be interested, especially since they have shown interest in other ancient cultures previously (e.g. ancient Egypt).
I’ll bet that all of the little Submarinerlings are well acquainted with “molon labe,” especially its implications to modern American society. ![]()
From another board:

I do laugh at our irony as well. ![]()

The monument reads simply: “Μολών λαβέ” (“Come and take them!”)
That movie had more to say about character than you will hear at school or from most pulpits in twenty years.
Love the “That We Promise” poster above.
Every politician should get a complimentary copy, suitably framed for display on the wall.
Just saw this today. Great movie!
For anyone who hasn’t seen it, Go see it!
