I want a light on my AR, but I don’t want a huge one. Would this be an OK setup or would it just look weird? I have a Magpul hand guard and a small rail section to mount it on.
First, I commend you for putting a light on your carbine. Any rifle you may call on for defense of yourself/your property should have a light.
I ran a TLR-1s for several years on a rifle similar to yours (as a work gun, a patrol rifle). The problem you’re going to face is a lack of real estate on your hand guards, so if you use an MOE rail section, you’re going to have to run the light at 2 o’clock to keep it out of the way (this, assuming you’re a right handed shooter); this position would require use of a tape switch.
I’m relatively new to the forums and hope I’m not violating a board policy with my recommendation of a specific vendor here, but Travis Haley’s line of Thorntail Adaptive light mounts is where I would look to source a mount for your TLR-1. Then you can get the light out of the way while still running it on the port side of the weapon, and wireless (just index the actuator with your reaction side hand).
I use (for now) a trl-1 on a right handed shooter (light on the left) scout light mount from mag pull. It works great for right handed shooting. Transitions to left… not so much. I’d imagine any rail mounted solution will be handicapped in the same way. Get the mount that lets you put it in front of the fsb and you’ll be much better off.
+1 on that, I use the same but with a G2 and Vltor mount. Works great on my Noveske N4 basic, and worked well on my 6920 until I put a DD RIS II FSP on it.
Mossie Tactics also makes an FSB mount for the TLR1 that is regarded well around these parts. That pic is from a user masakari. There is also a thread in Gen discussion regarding the mount here:
Here is how I attached an X200 to my 6520. Despite the Magpul Scout mount I have being for the right hand side, I can still reach over and work the toggle switch. The X200 comes pretty close to the FSB but it just clears it.
I can also attach my G2 LED using a Vltor light mount but it’s difficult to get on the Magpul Scout mount and it rubs against the FSB. I can activate the momentary push button on the back similar to the X200 but I think I’d rather have the mount for the left hand side if I were going to go with this light or an actual scout light.
