Tips for precision assembly?

I was thinking about this in bed this morning. New barrel nuts are to be tq and loosen three times, for whatever reason. If the nut is timed correctly the first time, do you still need to loosen it and tighten it 2 more times?

There is actually a range for certain barrel lengths. So 7.5-12.5 has a range, 13.7-14.5 has a range and 16-20 has a range.

The 1.4646 is about in the middle of the range for a 16" barrel.

Thanks Grant, Quick google search told me it is to mate the threads better and knock down “high spots”. This would provide more surface area to the threads to grab on too. Now I just need some moly grease. Wheel bearing grease I have only has 3% moly.

I like this stuff over just plan moly grease: http://www.henkelna.com/product-search-1554.htm?nodeid=8797878157313

Thanks for all the help Grant and everyone else!

Must be a pretty small range if that is the middle. The next size down gauge in the set is the chamber minimum.

Finished up for the most part, waiting on the Syrac gas block to come in tomorrow. The gas tube flare at the bcg needed a few thou taken off. Had issue of the bcg not going in to battery due to the gas block. When I got to pick up some small parts (finishing my spare parts kit) I’ll grab a gas tube for rifle. I fired two rounds for function, tomorrow range time!

Nice! Might I suggest a SOPMOD or STR stock for a better cheek weld. You won’t regret a nice, comfortable stock for a rifle like this. What trigger did you end up using?

Another important aspect to accuracy is a good solid mount for your optic to receiver and the proper torque on same.

Try out one of these for us :stuck_out_tongue: hah

Anyway, some good information in here. Benefits me as well.

Thanks! Yes that is on the list, I’ve been wanting a SOPMOD for a while, to later throw on my other rifle. STR would be the ticket through. Trigger I used is a SSA, does not fit the role so much but is alot better than trigger that comes from BCM or Daniel Defense (DD being my go to rifle). The build above is using BCM lower and upper.

Yes sir, using a American Defense Recon mount.

Those are very nice!

The tq of the nut had to be at 40ftlbs to get it to locate right, with a small. 006 shim. When I go to install the syra gas block, I’m going to see if I can get the tq under 40ftlbs. Rather be at 34-36. Rather be in the middle of the range vs at the limit of the lower or upper range.

The graphite in that stuff doesn’t make it a no-no?

I’ve got to get a better trigger. I mistakenly grapes the wrong lower with the mill spec 6 pound trigger. Good thing about it is it make it harder and this I had to concentrate harder in my shots. I put 40 rounds through it 10 for zero 15 for group and rest were banging steel at 200 yards ( 2/3 man size and 2 5 inch gongs.
I’m very green to the precision thing. I do need a better scope, have a primary arms FFP 4x14. May pick up a vortex in the same flavor, heard great things about them.
