Thoughts on PWS MK1 lower assembly

I recieved this lower reciever for chrstmas and was wondering what opinons people have on them if any… it came with the enhanced buffer tube and tungsten buffer, had a standard trigger thats been swapped out with a Geissele DMR. im putting a Noveske 16" SS recon upper on it… any thoughts? its a local company so i thought i would support them, also just got a FSC556 to swap out the smith vortex.

Any thoughts?

Bump If no one saw it, any thoughts would be nice

No high regards for PWS I take it, did the wife make a bad purchase

Here ya go,some info,http://primaryweapons.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=136&idcategory=22 I wouldn’t worry about it,I am sure it is a quality Lower !!! Look at the spec’s,it all looks good !!! Try a Search & I am sure you will get some more info !!! Keep us posted on how it goes together !!! :)

I don’t have one but they look pretty well made. I believe the part that makes it “special” is the enhanced buffer tube. It is designed to prevent carrier tilt for a piston AR. I don’t think it will give you any benefit if you are putting a Noveske upper on it.
It is good that you are helping out and supporting a local company. I think they make quality parts. Your wife did good.

O

I’ll jump in on this one.

No your wife didn’t make a bad purchase. While many would say that the PWS lower has some features some might say are “unneeded,” it’s not a bad thing. i.e. the enhanced receiver extension is often cited as being overkill, but it’s not a bad thing. PWS from what I’ve seen makes decent stuff, and their piston upper line is supposedly one of the best engineered piston uppers out there. I don’t believe a piston AR is the end all be all of AR designs, but if I ever got the urge to buy one it’d probably be a PWS.

Find an upper to put on it and shoot the piss out of it. Report back later and let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the replies… It looks and fits great with the noveske upper and the magpul moe stock is a nice tight fit on the enhanced buffer. I’ll get back after putting some rounds through it

Sorry for not replying. I would have loved to jump on this, I think I’m one of only a few resident “PWS guys”. I have a PWS MK110 at home. Unfortunately, I don’t have any cool guy photos to post for you, but over an overall review on it I do have.

I won’t comment too much on the upper, because you’re concerned with the lower. As stated above, some say their enhanced buffer tube is overkill, and for most DI guns, it is, but it is definitely a nice touch. It’s entirely overbuild for most people’s uses. It has vertical drain holes in the bottom for draining water in maritime environments, some light fluting, and obviously, the extended “lips” on the bottom that cradle the carrier.

The tube itself is sited by PWS as having been designed for the HK416 specifically. It really shines with piston systems that tend to see more carrier tilt than DI guns do. It’s not necessary for many people’s uses, but I do like the fact that they attach without a castle nut, but actually mount really solidly. The other nice touch is the milled in QD cups on the tube, which means not having to attach an aftermarket sling mounting option which tends to making fully closing the stock a PITA.

With the QD cups on the extension, weapon handling is pretty fantastic, using the PWS upper, which has QD cups milled into the trunion on the foreend, using a 2-point is very comfortable. So if you go with a rail mounted QD cup for a 2-point, that rear mounting point is nice. Single point sling utilization is also very nice with that QD mount position and makes shoulder transitions very easy.

The LPK in the lower is very nice, and very solid. I don’t know who makes it, but I believe it may even be a Colt LPK. They used very high quality parts in their guns. The receiver itself is very pretty, and from the short time I looked it over, was in spec. Some people care about rollmarks, some don’t. I’m not one to really care much about markings, but I do feel like the PWS logo is one of the nicer looking rollmarks out there. I think PWS and DD are my two favorite right now, with Noveske pulling a close 3rd. If you care, or are wondering, their logo is the symbol that was once used on battlefield maps to represent a cannon, and is now sometimes used to denote artillery (modern cannons).

The only thing about the lower that I didn’t “like” are the selector stops on the left side. Many lowers have them, some don’t, I personally don’t care for them as they aren’t needed, but that’s nothing against PWS themselves. It’s a standard lower reciever for the most part. Obviously, as you know, PWS outfits their lowers with Magpul MOE furniture. Complete guns come with MBUS gen2 sights.

Overall, I would rate the PWS lowers (as a total package) as one of the better complete lowers to buy, right up there with the Noveske Gen2 lowers with their flared magwell. They are a little more expensive than some of the DD, Colt, or BCM offerings, but as a total package, as I said, I think they bring that little bit extra to the table, mainly with the receiver extension. Sure, it’s overbuilt, but it’s a nice touch and is definitely uniquely PWS.

I hope this helps a bit, again, sorry that I missed the thread. For whatever reason, there’s not a whole lot of information about PWS as a whole. You may find some reviews on their MK107 Diablo guns or the “DC” uppers. PWS, in their earliest days named their uppers DC-XX (eg DC-16 for a 16" barrel) and their Diablo was the MK107. To unify their lines and to simplify naming proceedures, everything became MK1XX for their MK1 (5.56/x39/.300BLK) line and MK2XX for their MK2 (.308) line.

The company has been around quite some time, they don’t do a whole lot of advertising, I don’t think I’ve ever seen any in a major publication. I think the biggest thing for “marketing” that PWS has done is that the MK107 Diablo was one of the guns in the Xbox game “Homefront”. Information is a little bit scarce. I think there was a complete review on a rifle on snipershide. When I was looking into these rifles initially, I had a buddy post it on here for me, as I can’t get to SH on .gov computers. Overall, definitely be happy, your lower is solid and while a little bit “overkill” on the receiver extension, I feel like it gives it that nice final touch to put it above some of the other offerings.

Thanks viper for the lengthy reply its reassured me in the purchase, I wasn’t sure what LPK was installed but I’m glad to hear that it is a quality one, still didn’t like the standard trigger so I put the the DMR and man what a difference. I’m looking forward to hitting steel at a couple hundred yards

No worries brother. Glad to help. You’ll have to post pictures when you get a chance.

Here’s some pics they are taken with a phone so sorry if their crappy

Looking good LS.

You get to take her out and shoot her yet?

I have only heard very good things about PWS. Looks like you have a great complete AR now.

Make sure to post in the introduction thread, but I’m somewhat surprised to see someone that knows a bit about PWS.

I’ve shot around 200 rounds through her and she’s flawless so far done quick fire with mag changes and slow 200 yard shots… Just acquired some 1" thick still 8" steel plates I’ll be interested in how for away I can hit them. If I do my part its a sub MOA rifle easily!

Just posted an intro (thanks for the hint!), and to be clear “someone that knows a bit about PWS” makes me sound like I know what the heck I’m talking about.

I was only relaying what impressions I’ve gathered as I’ve been gathering my own information while shopping for ARs and PWS has risen to near the top of my list based upon my own criteria.

PWS rifles are awesome. I’m extremely pleased with my MK 110. M4C is pretty divided for or against piston rifles, but PWS doesn’t come up much here.

I’ve found that there is not alot of talk of piston guns or PWS guns here either… But I value the opinions here more than arfcom, so that’s why I asked but from the lower they seem like quality. The only thing I have a problem with is the fit of the receiver and the Magpul trigger guard, if I’m not wearing gloves it’ll catch my finger and cause irritation.

That’s wierd. Roll pin hole seems a little high but maybe you can find a trigger guard that sits lower.
