Thoughts on a SECOND optic

First the position I’m currently at,

I have a Colt 6920 that I’ve had for 4+ years now, it is set up with a KAC RAS with a G2L light mounted, Sopmod stock, Aimpoint M4s, and LMT fixed BUIS. It has a few other items but these are the heart and soul. It serves primarly in a SD/HD role.

Next, I also have a BCM with 14.5 barrel that serves mainly as a back up to the Colt. I have a full spares kit but I feel this was the ultimate spare in case of a catastropic event.

Now a thought. I have been considering the idea of puting an ACOG, possibly something in the TA31 series, on the 16" barrel Colt and making it into something of a “field rifle”. While changing the Aimpoint M4s and RAS and light over to the 14.5" BCM and making it my primary SD carbine, partly because it is slightly shorter and slightly lighter.

I have very little experience with the ACOG but I can’t really see any advantage in the low powered ACOGs over the Aimpoint I already have. I thought the 4x ACOG may give me an advantage for hunting, distance use etc (field use). Is my thinking here solid or am I deceiving myself? This is not something I will be rushing into, this is sort of what would be the next best step.

I recently bought a TA31F, and am completely happy with it. I think your thinking is dead on.

If you’re willing to deal with the almost tragially short eye relief of the TA31, you’ll be extremely happy with the optic. The 3.5x are better about it, but the TA11 is a bit bulky for my tastes.

It still might be worth considering picking up an Aimpoint PRO and a magnifier if the second rifle’s role is a backup to the first, and just remove the magnifier if necessary.

I still do prefer a magnified optic in the toolkit, so the ACOG is a better situational choice.

Thanks for the replies, and thanks for the link F2S.

Again this is not a rushed decision so I’ve got plenty of time for research, and now a few more options to research. Thanks again.
