This is how I think the original M16 should have been configured, if the US military could have fully embraced the “assault rifle” concept; that is, accepting the reality that >95% of combat takes place at ranges <300m.
Plus, the configuration balances perfectly for me, and it just feels “right”. Weight: 6lbs. 8oz.
Giving my old Colt H-Bar (The screwed version with sear block and neutered bolt) a make over by swapping out the stock barrel with a FN 5.56 CL 16" Mid-Length Pencil Profile with a standard A-2 hand guard and a undecided adjustable or fixed stock.
But now that I see how nice the basic A-1 stock looks with A-2 hand guard I might just go that route.
I keep coming back to this thread. Great simple, basic, balanced build. The only thing I am going to change when I build its twin is the addition of a light. I think I am at about a 95% solution on parts either on hand or ordered. These darned things are like potato chips…you can’t have just one.
The only thing I would change with that is an adjustable stock and a flat top rail. Not everyone fits that M16 stock, and we would like the option of adding optics easily
