I know Wolf ammo sucks, compared to quality brass ammo but there is only one reason I would run it through one of my ARs.
That reason…
Winter!

I really hate shooting 20rds and only finding 18 or 19 empties.

What’s the problem, you’re worried about not recovering a couple of empty casings?
Do you shoot on private property? If so, you can wait for spring to find the brass.
I like policing my brass. I also trade my empties with friends who reload. I just really wanted to bitch a little about the snow and see if anyone else shared my sentiments.
You could always put away the AR for the season and take up bowling? It’s winter… It’s not new… it’s been around for a while. We all hate it but it is what it is.
Wolf and other steel case gets a bad rap but I have to say I have shot a lot of it especially out of pistols and I have never had a problem. I have read that in rifles if you shoot brass than steel your fine but not the other way around unless you clean the rifle first. My understanding is that steel lets more carbon pass since it does not seal the chamber as much, the steel does not expand as much as brass. The extra fowling in the chamber can cause brass cases to stick since the chamber diameter is a bit smaller. That is the short and sweet answer but I have to say I have never seen any real problems. With the price of ammo and availability I have a bit of everything since I will take about anything I can find.

The majority of the ammo I put through my ARs is Wolf. My experience has been that first rate rifles handle second rate ammo with no problem. Second rate rifles seem to choke on the stuff now and again.
Last class I was in I decided to shoot Wolf to save money. After reading the threads I assumed my LMT 16" would eat the ammo without issues. All through the morning and after lunch went fine. During my down time I made sure not to leave a round in the hot chamber. Life is good!
The final iteration of the class and round #2 did not eject and I was using the sidearm.
The worst part of the whole deal came when I cleaned the rifle. A lot of sludge came out of the chamber. I don’t think I will run it for a class again. The instructors AR did the same thing using Wolf at the previous class, but I don’t recall what brand his AR was. <– CLUE, I guess I thought it wouldn’t happen to me.
498 rounds of Wolf that day. Almost made it to 500.
The LMT 16" had 2303 rounds through it when it choked. Only other issue with this rifle was failure to go into battery during a class in the rain and mud (~1100 rounds at the time) and I didn’t reapply lube during lunch. A few squirts of CLP and I was GTG.
The days of “Don’t shoot wolf! It’s crappy ammo!” are over. These days you shoot whatever you can get your hands on.
If Wolf runs in your guns and you can get it, shoot it. It’s dirty and it often causes issues in guns built with milspec gas systems, but if you don’t mind cleaning and your gun is already overgassed, go for it.
i plink with wolf at the range with mine, no problems. I use brass for zeroing and classes
I use it often, but prefer Silver Bear as far as steel cased goes.
The crazy 5.56 ammo prices are what led me to the S&W 5.45 rifle. 5.45x39mm surplus is still dirt cheap, currently $130 for 1080. At a savings of over $200 per case, if you shoot 3 cases of ammo you have paid for the upper. Just another option if you are looking for cheaper shooting.
This is the way to go these days for high volume shooting.
I personally have fired thousands of rounds of Wolf and Brown Bear out of my LMT ARs. Never had any sort of serious issues with it other than one stuck case in my LMT 14.5" after firing about 900 rounds in one day on top of nearly 2000 rounds without cleaning. ![]()
+1, I have a bunch of Wolf ammo and it’s never caused an issue in my gun. It may not be my favorite stuff to shoot but I can get it when I need it so it works for me.
Guys, there are a million Wolf ammo threads here. That, in addition to:
