thinking of buying an AK

Got a guy local that has a “Republic Firearms” manufactured “AK74” Fired 200 rounds through it and of course he says it shoots fine and is accurate. Comes with one mag and 200 rounds of ammo he is asking 650.00 I am wondering if that isn’t a bit high. Im going to change a few things, add a light and red dot. It will be a fun gun but also a shtf gun if it proves reliable. I was thinking more 450.00 but I don’t want to insult the guy. I am at the mercy of the experts here and yes I used the search. Thanks guys this will be my first AK. I mainly have M4 type carbines but I want to diversify a little.

I am not familiar with that particular AK. But I don’t think you would be out of line to offer him $450. Less people know about the differences in AKs and it’s not always as clear cut as ARs. I always factor that in when purchasing/selling AKs.

Since you brought up SHTF, I would look around and make sure you can get 5.45 ammo easily/cheaply. I have always found 7.62x39 ammo easier to come by and more enjoyable so I have stuck with them.

I have found three or four sources online. less than 300 for 1K. I am open to 7.62 if I can find a good one for a good price.

I wouldn’t buy the rifle. If you’re going to buy an AK-74 then buy once cry once and get the Arsenal SLR-104. That company you mention isn’t even known among the AK community. The SLR-104 is the best of the factory built rifles you can buy. The only other option is to buy an Unissued Bulgarian AK-74 kit, Childers or NoDak receiver, 922r compliance parts and have one of the top AK smiths build it for you unless you have the tools and knowledge to build it yourself. These two options are the only options for a fighting AK that you can bet your life on. Everything else is a hobby gun prone to fail.

I appreciate the advice. I did walk away from it. I love Arsenal but I was looking for a used rifle I could slightly accessorize. The used market is almost as bad as the new market and unfortunately people think all AK’s are Russian and therefore no longer being imported which drives the prices up.

Can’t blame you one bit for not getting it. Personally I don’t care for that round one bit. 7.62x39 is a better general use round.

Well this is no longer current. Just bought a Arsenal SLR104-53 in 5.45x39mm and will be efiling my form 1 next week. I’ve wanted a Krink since I watched Goldeneye as a kid. I spent some time on a friends full size SLR104 and am sold on the 74. It’s just a fun gun so I am resigned to having to purchase ammo online.
