About two months ago I picked up a Glock 23. At first, I thought I would use it as a beater gun but to my surprise it has quickly become one of my favorites. I also have an HK P30l which used to be my favorite 9mm until I started shooting with a thumbs forward grip, and now that I do the slide never locks back because my thumb interferes with the slide release. So in short I think I want to trade it in for a gen 4 17. I am asking y’all for what you would do mainly because I am really indecisive. Thanks for any input, it is greatly appreciated.
I had a P30 but I sold it due to deciding to go all SFA vs. DA/SA, the grip was a little rough for IWB without a t-shirt, and I had the same thumbs forward issues you are having. My very uneducated two cents would be to stick with one manual of arms so if you like the G23 and SFA then I’d trade the P30 for Gen4 G17 and use the cash you should get back for more ammo.
+1. I have a P30 and really like it, but if the Glock fits you better then by all means go that route.
Glock, H&K, S&W, Sig,…etc. All are well made firearms that will serve you well given that you do your part. Find that make and model that is right for you and don’t worry too much about it. If you aren’t a H&K guy, then sell the P30 and get the Glock if that is your taste.
I agree…Stick with what works…I have a P-2000 with a light LEM,(9mm) and a FS M&P 9…I have trouble shooting with the LEM, and very little problem with the striker fired M&P…I’m probably going to stick with the M&P, I’ve been considering selling the HK,I don’t feel the need to learn two systems, besides the M&P feels better in my hands than the P-2000 does. Something to consider…I’ve read where others have had the same problem with the levers/thumbs on a P-30, and some folks have shortened the levers,by cutting a little off with a dremel…Also I read where HK does have a striker fired pistol in the works…something like a P-30 with no hammer…
Uh, you can solve the slide lock problem by moving your strong thumb on top of your weak thumb. No real sacrifice in grip.

When I first started shooting handguns (about two years ago) I for some unknown reason was biased against Glocks. I now realize that it was for no other reason than other people’s shit talking. The reason for switching was almost exactly as jdavis so eloquently put it:to keep my grip the same. I just got back from the fun store; they gave me 625 for the P30L that had a round count of a little over 2k and came with 1 extra mag. I traded it for a gen 4 17(blue box) with tru glo tfos and a membership to GSSF. I know they made money twice but when . All in all I am pretty satisfied, but am curious about what yall think.
vecdran, uh I had tried that grip method and found that when I transitioned to larger caliber pistols using that style grip my controllability suffered, not much but significantly enough to notice…I guess Im all about maximum coverage
I had the same issue with that pistol and sold it rather than radically change my grip. I have 3 X 4G 17’s and one G14 19. I’ve been very happy with the Gen 4 Glocks’.
Thats good to hear hk45, To tell the truth I loved my P30L’s trigger even though I know a lot of people are not fond of HK’s DA/SA. A USP compact may be in my future though.
I was in the same boat. Loved the way the P30L felt but none of my other pistols are DA/SA. Also was at the time extremely hard to find a holster for. Sold it & bought both M&P full size and compact w/ safeties & haven’t regretted it at all.
Ill try almost anything once. ![]()
I got rid of a few guns, I had Glock-HK-M&P and went all M&P. It hurt a bit, but I am over it now and couldnt be happier.
+1. Did pretty much the same thing.
Once I started really working on the “Indian” instead of worrying about the “Arrow” and got my grip together, I found that the P30 just didn’t work for me anymore, ditto for Sigs and any other pistols that are equipped with levers on their sides…
FWIW, I also had an aversion to Glocks for a long time, mostly do to all the s**t talking you hear and the glocktalk crowd, now I couldn’t imagine not having/shooting one, low drama+high performance=good.
