The oldies have all been updated as far as they can go in my opinion. They are still all good solid rifles, but are being surpassed. Far from lipstick on a pig though.
JLD A6XXX rifle here - been veddy, veddy, good to me. Ran some Silver Bear (cheapest I’d go, as I got a case in a deal years ago) through it, as well as S. African, Port, and some old Hirtenberger - ate it all and came back for more!
Run a Leupold Mk.IV CQ/T on a MFI Lo-mount on mine.
I’m looking at a PTR-91 (evidently one of the current production ones). It’s marketed as having a bull barrel. Does this substantially affect the balance of the weapon?
Compared to the HK profile barrels, it does. I notice a definite balance shift with the non-GI PTRs compared to my GI. Would this cause a problem if that was your only PTR, probably not, but it certainly is noticeable.
As the previous post mentioned, you may notice it if you have another HK style weapon to compare it to. I only have one and it has a bull barrel. Hasn’t bothered me at all. Very handy and comfortable to shoot.
The GI model (with green surplus HK furniture) has generally positive reviews on Bud’s. One common remark was that the bore was corroded on some examples, and one fellow said that the green plastic handguard (or stock?) on his PTR-91 melted somewhat when bore cleaner spilled on it. That’s curious.
Well I put money down on the pdw model this afternoon. Everything checked out good. I would have no problem getting a full size. One thing that seems to eat the purists is the redesigned cocking tube.
Just put a PTR-91 GI (green furniture) on layaway with Bud’s. Guess I’ll see if it’s all it’s cracked up to be

I have a PTR91K that hasn’t failed me. It ate everything I could find to feed it, including some really old and nasty Indian surplus.
Its a heavy pig, with a heavier than mil spec barrel. I get 2moa out of it kind of rested with Irons, or a crappy 4x.
I wouldn’t hesitate if a roller lock .308 is something you want.
My PTR91KF has been 100% reliable with Russian steel-cased .308. It seems to dislike some brass stuff. Prvi Partisan 145 grain FMJ has been the most reliable brass-cased in it. Some Winchester 7.62 NATO turned it into a bolt action. Can’t say I’m too upset that it likes the cheapest ammunition the best, though

For those of you that have the most recently manufactured PTR 91 rifles, how is the accuracy from one model to another?
I’m looking at the PTR 91 G.I. R and the PTR 91 G.I. FR that Atlantic sells. I believe the FR has a thicker profile barrel, but I’m curious how much more accurate it is over the standard G.I. R version. If it’s not that much more accurate I’ll probably go with the standard G.I. R to save a little weight and some money.

Correct. At least the two I mentioned above are. All the reviews I’ve seen lately make them out to be basically problem free now (Which is why I’ve been looking at them now myself). Hopefully those with experience with them can chime in.

I have a newer A3R with black, wide forend and an earlier heavy barrel with the rail system up front. I shoot both with irons.
Maybe because I mounted a bipod, maybe it’s the shallow flutes, maybe it’s psychological, but the heavy barrel groups tighter.
I’m mostly an FAL guy and I must also add to this post that the new DSA Voyager is a phenomenal gun for the price, despite having the cast receiver.
Thanks, thats what I figured but wasn’t sure. Do you prefer one to the other now that you own both and is the weight difference enough to worry about? I know they’ll both be heavier than the ARs and AKs I own, but I’ve shot a few M1As on occasion with no issues so I don’t imagine it would be too bad.
As far as the DSA FAL goes, I’d LOVE to have one and have entertained the idea more than a few times. This is my first semi-auto .308 though, and the availability and cost of the mags for the HK91/PTR91 rifles is the main reason for choosing it over the other .308 guns as it would allow me to acquire an acceptable amount of mags before possible upcoming bans/price hikes.
I only shoot the A3R now.
If I was going back to the HB, I would build it up as a DMR and see what kind of accuracy I could really wring out of it.
Now that you guys have me thinking about it, I might put some green stocks on today…
I have two.
I had one of the mid 90s ones on the receiver that had a rail, but it was weird built aluminum,
Charging handle would get almost frozen up when hot, was not reliable, etc.
I had the parts rebuilt on a PTR receiver. Now it’s reliable.
I also bought one of the telescoping stock PTR ones. also reliable.
But when it comes to mounting an optic, ergs, etc,
Just get an AR10.
I was not 100% happy with my DPMS one. There were not many options a dozen years ago.
With the Pmags I am totally satisfied.
I’ve been on the fence here of late for a PTR91 GI R that are exclusives for Atlantic; paddle mag release, 1913 optic rail, gray finish, metal style lower trigger pack.
Over on HKPro there is a thread of recent PTR91s '15/'16 concerning lack of steel hardening in their bolts and some other issues. This is the stuff that keeps me from pulling the trigger on one.
I’ve been holding out for the MKE/Zennith Z-41s but the election and panics are nearing and no word when they will be here.
As for AR10’s I’ve got the bug for a DD5V1 bad, handled one at a LGS and that thing is nimble.
