These sights any good?

New to the forum. I have a M&P without iron sights and I am looking for a good set to put on her http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_764994_-1_757785_757784_757784_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y. I like the standard handle sights and I found this set http://www.armalite.com/ItemForm.aspx?item=E20200&ReturnUrl=Categories.aspx?Category=b5d84597-3666-4326-89c9-15fac1afdf18 This rifle will mainly be doing plinking/varmint shooting. Comments?

Are you will to spend more? If so, I would look at getting some Troy sights. I would recommend Magpul front and rear MBUS’s but I don’t know how the front sight will hold up being on that gas block.

MBUS front isnt even the right height to be mounted on a gas block. the upper and handguard rails are at a taller height than gas blocks. Some companies make front sights specially for the gas block height. I know Midwest Industries makes one.

yea MBUS plastic on a gas block isnt a good idea either.

So could I go with that particular rear sight and find me a front sight from Midwest Industries? I’m looking for the low profile front sight correct?

In the pic it appeared that the gas block and upper were on the same plane, which is why I suggested it. In any case I also didn’t think it would hold up to the heat.

If it were me I would put a rail on that thing and mount the BUIS all the way forward.

LB, first determine the height of your railed gas block. In the picture at this link: http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_764994_-1_757785_757784_757784_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y, it looks to me that the railed gas block is the same height as the top of the receiver. You can confirm this by laying a yardstick, level, or any other long, straight, rigid something spans the distance from the rear of the receiver to the from of the gas block. If your long, straight, rigid something lays flat on both the receiver and the gas block, you will then need a rail height front sight. Check that out, because if memory serves me correctly, I’ve seen two different height railed gas blocks used on optics ready carbines. I seem to remember earlier models of the S&W OR carbine having shorter railed gas blocks.

Regardless of whether you have a taller or shorter gas block, there are solutions for your detatchable front sight; both fixed and folding. Same for the rear sight. If you like the carry handle look and elevation wheel, that’s fine; nothing wrong with that. There is also a variety of good fixed rear sights out there, too. The Troy Fixed rear Battlesight and the Daniel Defense A1.5 rear sight come to mind, both being solid units that won’t break the bank. If you’re looking to put some sort of optic on the rifle, maybe consider at least a rear folding sight.

my bad i usually assume if its a gas block rail, its not the same height. If it is the same height disregard the special sight you have to buy.

Thanks a lot guys, I’ll check the height to make sure they are level. I’m pretty sure they are. So I really just need to make sure to have a rail height front sight that’s not plastic. I’ll keep hunting around and see what I find. The Troy sights look great but I’m trying to keep the sight picture as close to the normal M4 iron sights and troy uses the circle round the front post instead of the flared guard around the front sight, that and they are a little pricy.

Troy makes both.

I’ve had pretty-much every BUIS there is. My two favorites are the MI and Troy. The Troys are, well, Troys, and they’re all I run. However, the MI stuff is really good. They’re solid, easy to deploy and fold, and don’t gouge themselves and become rough like the GG&G ones I’ve tried.

Just me, though.

How about a good handle style rear sight? I have two that I have found to look pretty good. Now which one looks better?

EDIT

I think I will go with the DPMS handle sight and match it up with this front sight. It looks to be for the same height plain as the regular rail by the measurements.

Those who have used the circular type really like them. I know I do.

Take a look at this.

I’m looking for the handle style sight. Thanks though.

If you keep an eye on the EE, you will see some nice Carry Handle sights going for $60 to $70 shipped.

I had never seen the Armalite handle before. I don’t know anything about it, but I’m in the market for a CH as my optics budget was just smashed. :frowning:
