It’s entertaining, don’t get me wrong. But between the US and German troops both using WWII Era Lee Enfields, General MacArthur wearing USMC Insignia, and countless historical inaccuracies I’m basically watching it the same way I would a Hollywood Movie.
I couldn’t believe the Enfields, how hard can it be to find some 1903 Springfields and Mausers? Well, at least they weren’t Arisakas, lol.
I definitely thought McAuthur’s uniform didn’t look right. I didn’t even look period correct to me.
Still learning some new stuff though. For instance, I didn’t know that much about Mussolini’s rise to power, or that Lenin was exiled to Switzerland and that the Bolshevik revolution was funded by Germany.
I watched a bit of it yesterday that showed the part where the Germans sent in Lenin. Didn’t see the rest, but not surprised that it was cheesy. Most of of the rest of the stuff they show is anymore.
Watched a little of this myself… until I couldn’t take it anymore… I mean really, in part 2, in one scene German paratroopers are in the air, and the back of the airplane they jumped out of, is clearly a C-130, Doesn’t anyone making a show like this care about detail? With all the computer animation available, they couldn’t at least put the correct aircraft in? and like everyone else said, Germans with Enfields? come on…with a total estimated production of 125 million Mausers, The producers couldn’t find enough to do the show with?
Or the Japanese navy ship that looked just a little to modern… and I’m almost positive they showed a B17/29 engine cowling for a “Jap” plane as well.
Or the “german” Luftwaffe flying B17s and firing Browning .50s in a waist gunner position…unless it was supposed to be the Brits, in which case this would imply they deployed bombers in an anti-air role. Yeah… sure…
Glad I’m not the only person OCD’ing out over this stuff.
I’m sure there’s all sorts of historical inaccuracy and brushovers, but my WW2 is a bit rusty to pick 'em out.
I mean, given the target audience who wouldn’t know a Mauser from a Mosin or a Zero from a Spitfire, so… I guess in that light it’s ok watching. Better than yet another rehashed LE drama.
Good to see the Holocaust was the “Total Solution”…Patton’s army in Sicily carrying Lee Enfields, and B17s bombing London.
I think what I like most about this is it shows exactly how dire the circumstances for the allies were before mid 1942. They really didn’t know if they would win, which is different than how most WWII Programming is presenting.
I love the little bits in between shows and commercials where they talk about a particular weapon or something. Just saw it again this morning where they were talking about P-40 fighters then show an early model P-51 before they got the bubble canopies, Are they really that stupid or just that lazy ? There are plenty of pictures and videos of just about every american plane used in WW2 and quite a few of many flown by the other countries involved.
I’ll second everything you said. No other program has focused on the totality of the situation from 1914-1945 through the actions of all of the key leaders as it played out. It was all about the people and I liked that. It puts a lot of things in perspective. Even though it drove me nuts to no end watching every soldier of the world march on with a Lee Enfield, it was still a good program.
For a show that was supposed to include Patton, there didn’t mention him after the Normandy invasion (or did I miss it). He was used as a decoy for Calais, they invaded, then they were racing the Russians, and then Hitler committed suicide…It almost as though they planned for 4 or more episodes but had to rush the ending.
Also, they mentioned the Sicily invasion as the first US involvement in Europe completely ignoring the Africa campaign. Or did I miss it?
Did you know that the Communists stormed the Winter Palace and overthrew the Czar?
If you are right now screaming at your computer screen in anger, congratulations. That means you are more informed on the subject of history than the entire History channel. The error cited above is but one of the many that the History Channel included in their three part series, “The World Wars,” this week. The amazing thing is that not only a particular History Channel writer made these errors but that nobody at the History Channel spotted them. Are they so involved in the “history” of Ancient Aliens over there that they have completely lost track of real history?
That article quote almost sounds like they read this thread first.
But seriously- between the stupid aliens, pawn shops, pickers, and whatever other reality show garbage they’ve become infested with over the least few years I second that question- have they completely lost track of historical fact?
To me History Channel should bear the most blame (because you know, they’re the “HISTORY” channel…) in this area, but I see this in everything- quality and factual representation has given way to speed-feeding the overly simplified rehashed “cinematic” experience. You get to watch the same clip 647 times, listen to about 3 sentences of basic facts per clip (that they still manage to screw up), and then buzz off on our busy, busy little lives, where we can now text our even more ignorant friends and neighbors incorrect facts, and talked about how we “learned” something.
Lame.
For the record, History’s old 2 part series “WW1-The Death of Glory” was way better than this.
