The times are changing for the AK platform

Thought this was interesting and worthy of discussion:

I’m interested in seeing what this new is going to be.

Interesting. Maybe they’re adopting the Abakan?

I am sure Mikhail could give a shit less if they stop using it or not. It’s already been their lifeblood for decades.

He’s probably more upset that he didn’t design the AK in a country where he could have made big bucks rather than the paltry sums he has received from the “motherland”.

Yeah, and they were going to adopt a new assault rifle in 1991. Don’t hold your breath.

Maybe they were so impressed by Georgia’s Bushmaster rifles in 2008 that they’re switching to them.:no:

To be honest what wars are the Russian Army involved in. Maybe they go after a few pirates, but that is about it. They have a surplus of rifles.

If they do switch, I’m interested as well what they’ll come up with. China’s arms development over the last few years has strayed away from the AK.

Those BM’s got torched in place by the Russians, along with some Israeli Negevs.

Remember the AU-94 that the Russian military stated was going to replace the AK-74? They decided it was too expensive to had out en mass…I’m thinking that the “new” model that will be unveiled will just be an AK-74 2.0…

I surprised they havent stuck with the same design principle but developed a polymer framed, modular carbine like everyone else. Not much modularity with pressed and pinned barrels, sheetmetal, and rivets.

This is a very likely replacement.

I’m sure that the Ruskies will choose something of native design for national pride. Particularly if ole comrad Putin becomes leader again.

Good lord…no wonder they lost.

Didn’t they have a few Robinson Arms XCRs in their ranks as well?

I’m not really into AK’s but to me it looks like they are going to replace the AK with the AK??? Way to think outside the box.

Hopefully this will spur some of the indigenous arms designers to start working on some creative designs.

Who knows what will happen. I think they have too much pride and history to adopt any AR-15 variant.

But you’ve got to remember that they must be demilling thousands and thousands of those things each year. It doesn’t matter if they’ve been in storage or not, once they reach that age they get scrapped. But Russia could probably dump all their non-pristine condition rifles and still have enough for 3 Russia’s and 6 african uprisings.

I expect an abortion similar to this…

Heh… Hope Ivan’s been pumping iron at the gym to lug that thing…

Hell, it’s what I would do.

There is no replacement, they’ve got too many AK’s on hand to justify buying any more.

They can do like the Swiss and all the other Euro brethren - ship them to the US for surplus so CDNN can flood the market…
