The SBR & The Optic

Well, what would you get for your 12.5" shooting 50-200 yds.?

Well the TR-24 is out, do you mean the green reticle?

Honestly I don’t think I’d choose any of those optics for an SBR. They seem to compromise the advantages of an SBR’s weight/size in favor of no real advantage in accuracy out to your stated ranges. If I had to pick one I’d go with the ACOG just because it’s smaller.

Hate to be “that guy”, but none of them.

I tried the magnified optics on SBRs, its a pain in the ass.

T-1, EOTECH, whatever…some type of quality RDS

Third vote for a RDS.

Cameron

make it four

I would vote for the T1/3X Aimpoint combo.

Well, I already have a 10.5" w/ an awesome Aimpint Micro. So, I’m trying to spice things up, and I’d like to see the target a little closer at 100 yds-200 yds.

Maybe I should go with an Aimpoint and leave the door open for a Magnifier:D.

GutShot John,
The TR24R w/ red triangle is pretty hard to come by right now…I think. You have a lead?

Why were they a pain in the ass?

Of your choices, I voted for the TA33.

However, the Aimpoint T-1 and Troy rear sight, along with an Aimpoint magnifier in Larue tip-over mount offers a lot of options.

I think people get a bit to hung up on the color of the reticle. Red, Amber or Green your eye is designed to see all of them, that’s why you have the lantern color vision test using those three colors. If it starts to wash out in bright/evening sun, simply close the fiber-optic cover. Try opticsplanet.com for red or green.

If you’re interested in the optic I have a LN (box and all accessories) Amber TR-24 for sale with a LaRue SPR-E mount. I mounted it on an SPR, shot 20 rounds and took it off in favor of a TA-33H (also Amber). There is nothing wrong with it, I just really wanted the ranging reticle and the lighter-weight as the 24 is noticeably larger/heavier than the 21, this is why I recommended the 33.

Why do we want SBRs?

Because we want a more nimbly bimbly package. Something that slighter, easier to shoulder, easier to acquire faster, more “combat” accurate hits.

I ran a 12.5 with a short dot for over year (just in a civi roll) at several carbine courses and weekend shoots.

And you will find yourself chasing the dot at anything over 1.5x or more, so I ended up running it at 1.1x and found myself to have a $1500k more expensive Aimpoint.

That, on top of the weight, profile, batteries, etc.

I love the short dot and optics like it, but in my minuscule, civilian experience I find that they are better served on 14.5in+ rifles…for more of a general purpose roll.

good COGENT comments by DC.

NONE of those listed for SBR given it’s efficacy and effective range.

RDS & 3X.

A 7.62 SBR is a different story.

Great point(s). I have to ask at what range(s) you did most of your shooting. I’m just looking for something to shoot a little bit farther in this package than what I do typically in my 10.5" SBR. I would like to do a lot of shooting between 100-200 yds. Most of the shooting for the 10.5" is at 50 yds. and closer.

This is leading to the Aimpoint Micro in case you didn’t notice…

I have to say that for your parameters an RDS and a magnifier seem to be the best options. With a 50/200 zero (or hell, even a 100 yard zero) you don’t need to worry about a BDC or even hold-overs. With the LaRue flip mount you can ditch the magnification to the best-performing (whatever that means to you) RDS for distances that don’t need the magnification, and flip it into position for the times that you do, simply placing the dot on the place you want the bullet to go and pressing the trigger.

You will be faster than any ACOG at close range, with great low light/white light performance, and just as good as the COGs at your stated max range (200 yards). The glass isn’t as good as an ACOG, but you don’t need great glass to shoot 200 yards.

Just my opinon.

300yards and in.

Aimpoint Micro should be an option. I was dinging the 200 yd plate all day out of my 10.5 LMT. The plate was only about 8 by 12 so nothing to big. I’m sure it would work just fine out to 300 yds maybe not head shots though at that distance. If I added a magnifier then sure.

Well the Aimpoint & 3x on the LaRue flip does give a lot of options. Great up close and in a sec, 3X magnification. If I went with an Aimpoint and magnifier combo, what about a Ml3 in a LaRUe Cantilever? I know, bigger and heavier, but maybe a tad wider field of view? I’ve heard that they are better than the T-1/H-1 with the magnifiers. Experiences? Opinions?

To 200m I don’t need magnification for shooting, but it may be necessary for seeing.

Jut a thought.

I would get an RDS, probably a T-1 since that is what I am looking at now for my build.
