“Service Guarantees Citizenship”.

If the list of service options is lengthy and bipartisan, I see no problem. Heck, that seems like a good thing.

Watch for this to be tied to federal funding.

“Required” community service–I don’t think that will happen. If that issue is pushed, he loses control of Congress in 2010.

I don’t usually respond in general forums such as this, but here goes.

I am not sure what the OP means. Are you saying this is a good thing or a bad thing? It sort of looks to me like you are mocking it.

I see community service as a good thing and I think the lack of required service - community or military - is a major contributing factor to today’s sense of entitlement. Me, me, me, take, take take - frankly, I am sick of it.

Before you take issue with my comments, understand I am speaking about the concept of community service in general, not about the specifcs of anybody’s particular plan.

You bet I’m mocking it. I say its a way bullshit bad thing.

Community service is a good thing when its voluntary. It can even be a good thing when its mandated on certain individuals after commission of certain crimes and is mandated on a case by case basis by a court of law.

But to have big daddy Obama and his ilk mandate ‘community service’ as if he is the parent of my children - well no. I have to take issue with that. At that point it becomes compulsory service. And to what end? Who or what does it serve? Is it removing grafitti from walls? Removing body bags from abortion clinics? Cleaning up roadsides? Handing out needles at a methadone clinic? Working for ACORN? Serving coffee at the local NAMBLA hangout?

Bullshit. Please point to me the Article in the Constitution that its the responsibility of some choad bureaucrat in DC to tell me how my kids are to “serve”.

Absolutely.

What happens, though, when folks elect not to volunteer?

I didn’t vote for the guy, buy why don’t you wait on the proposed details before you ridicule the program. Who knows, it could be good. My guess is there will be a choice of programs. I, as an old fart, am looking forwad to what programs there might be for seniors in addition to what is currently available.

I am Republican, ex-military, and volunteer with our local police department. How about I design a service program for your kids? Better yet why don’t you do it. But make them serve something for the common good if they are not already doing so. And if they are already doing something for the common good I congratulate both them and you.

If the program was sold well, and BO is a master salesman, I wonder if it would be a losing issue. Like many other things, the easiest way to get it by would be incrementally. Tying it to funding makes it easier.

Schools receiving aid would be required to include it as a portion of certain curriculums. I can see a link to the next generation of NCLB mandates.

State welfare agencies would be required to include it in eligibility for certain aid programs. Already in play in some places.

University students would need to do it to receive federal student loan programs.

People would sign on to this quicker than you think.

Agreed. Believe me, I am no BHO supporter, I detest most of his ideas. But if someone says something that’s true, or advocates a good idea, I’m not going to be against it just because of who proposed it. We NEED more people to be concerned for community service, though like you said, it needs to be varied, so there are many different options and avenues for exercising that service. For example, I’d like to see an option for a youngster to volunteer teaching .22 rifles skills to Boy Scout groups, or something like that. Somehow, I doubt if that would make BHO’s list of “approved” community service options, though.

I would prefer mandatory military service over “community” service. Unless, of course, a person is free to pick what his or her community service is. The government mandating what the service has to be, outside of military service, would be a recipe for disaster.

Right. I don’t need to wait. I look at the man’s history and know what is to come. You know what they say about those that don’t learn from history?

As far as my kids go, you let me worry about it pardner.

But if you want to advocate something, how about mandatory Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, JROTC, ROTC, etc?

The good things are already out there. I don’t need a socialist lib telling me whats good for my kids.

iirc 180 hours of community svs were required to graduate from my high school.

Great movie.

Too funny!:stuck_out_tongue:

funny its been changed already again !!!

I guess thats his change !!!

I will change my mind all the time you will have no clue what I am doing !!!

now its a GOAL and tax credit of $4000 which you will need since he will be taking away way more than that !!
I bet if you have kids that refuse he will penalize you !!!

Sorry if this offends anyone but, The last time a program like this was tried in large scale it worked out great. It created a youth program unlike any other, encouraged national service and brought a nation to the world stage. It was the NATIONAL SOCALIST PARTY UNDER HITLER! He created the hitler youth, a civilan police force (sounds like a little speech given by someone earlier this year) and total gun control nationwide. Don’t be so quick to jump on this band wagon.

I can only imagine the screams from the leftist dogs if Bush had pushed something like this…

As long as I am paying for their education, assuming they go to public schools, and who knows however else I might be supporting them, I will worry about it.

GREAT!!! And did it hurt you or subvert you?
