I saw that on the news this morning as well. I’ll drink one in his honor as I mow the grass tomorrow.
I will raise a whiskey up tonight.
I don’t know why, but nobody could sing the sad ones like George Jones.
My favorite Jones tune…
There ain’t no O in front of the word Possum!
Never heard anyone call George the Opossum…just Possum.
He stopped loving her today is pure Country gold. They don’t make em’ like him anymore.
RIP Possum.
My father was a country music listener, and that was it. Had to learn anything else on my own. Had a healthy dose of “no show” George here in Mississippi.
Still like country, and George Jones will be missed. Listening and drinking tonight.
He was born not to far down the road from where I live now. I remember my dad listening to him when I was little.
We went to see Alan Jackson tonight, he opened the show with “He Stopped Loving Her Today”. It was an awesome tribute to the Possum. My eyes started to run midway through the song.
George Jones was one of the last of the old-time greats of Country music. As far as big names go, I don’t think any are left now, who first became big in the Fifties or Sixties. Hank Williams and Patsy Cline and Jim Reeves all died first, and Buck Owens died a couple of years ago. Who is left? Charlie Louvin? (Merle and Willie, etc. all got big in the 70s.)
I didnt know he was a Marine till yesterday.
Yup, Korean War era. It’s also interesting that his song “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” was one he was reluctant to do at first–he thought it was too sad.
This video drives it home.
Boy, it sure does. Thanks for linking to that.
