The New M&P4 — S&W's answer to the M4 Carbine

I just learned about this and since nobody has made a thread about it yet, here we are…

Currently these are Select Fire, ergo they’re for Military/Law Enforcement only, (unless the NFA is repealed) but I’m curious if they’ll eventually offer a semiautomatic only variant with a pinned and welded barrel for the civilian market.

I dunno, but I am sure the interest for them will begin if they were to get a contract from a major end user. The cloner boners will be all over it.

It has been suggested that Smith & Wesson began producing these in hopes of getting a Military Contract, either by means of the U.S. Military purchasing them for Foreign Military Aid in Israel and Ukraine, or by either of the aforementioned foreign nations militaries.

TFB “announcements” are often years late, or simply not-news. I think what happens is a manufacturer just sends them a press release as part of a marketing strategy, and they print it, because they need articles to run ads on. Like magazines, its all a self-licking circle jerk for marketing dudes to justify their existence. And here, we see evidence that it worked.

S&W has been offering select-fire carbines for a while. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have for the duration of the M&P15 line. They’ve been licensed to do so all along, I think.

There are other sources, all from this October.

Sure, but it’s not really news. They probably spam-blasted a press release from their marketing dudes after a quarterly meeting, because their sales dudes bitched that no one knew about their select-fires. They’ve sold select-fires for a while. With that said, I welcome the topic. It’s refreshing that someone actually wants to talk about guns around here.

I’d speculate that their select-fire guns are adequate for the intended purpose.

Yeah I dont think S&W and selct fire M4s are a new thing. I recall buying smiff and western contract overrun full auto BCGs from GandR several years ago, maybe 10.

I’d be curious to the quality of these rifles. Since the Army went from 3 MOA to 5 MOA for barrel requisites, I now question milspec quality of barrels.

You’d have to buy a Faxon barrel to get that level of inaccuracy. Who the ferk even makes barrels that bad?

I had a Faxon barrel that was sub MOA. But no longer owned because it was too over-gassed. As for for who and what, don’t know, don’t care, but I do know that they do exist. I do my research well when it comes to barrel purchasing.

That’s news to me. I’ve browsed their Law Enforcement catalog before, but never saw any models which were explicitly stated to be Select Fire, so it must have been a special order thing, or at least an option that wouldn’t be presented until the order was being placed.
Likewise, I’m certain that there were no models under the designation of “M&P4” previously, so this must be a rebranding of Select Fire M&P15s, intended for the purpose of raising awareness of Select Fire variants as you have proposed.
Last but not least, these are certainly an improvement over any previous Select Fire variants of the M&P15, because these have 4150 CMV barrels with a 1/7 twist whereas M&P15s all use 4140 CM with a 1/9 twist.
