Atlas Shrugged, and it sucked.
I, for one, don’t give a rat fart about Matt Damon’s political views. I loved the book, and even though most books-into-movies don’t get it quite right, I’m still interested in the movie. Thanks for the post, I had no idea they were making this one.

I haven’t been able to take a Matt Damon movie seriously ever since Team America. Also the stranded on Mars thing has been done to death starting with The Outer Limits. In fact “Stranded” is a good starting point for how this is hardly an original concept.
Then you have “Mission to Mars”, “The Last Days on Mars” but my favorite will probably always be “Angry Red Planet.”
Except “The Martian” is very “hard science” and has no supernatural elements nor aliens whatsoever… the title refers to Matt Damon’s character. The story is more closely related to Apollo 13 than any movie that has to do with being stranded on Mars.
But I mean, being stranded on Mars or on an island or on a mountain or whatever… it’s a story. Every story in broad terms has probably been told at least dozen times over in recent memory. It’s how the story is told that makes or breaks it, in my opinion.
Yep. No “pull back with camera to majestic wide shot revealing what’s actually causing the unexplained phenomenon” moments in this Mars story. What remains to be seen is if Hollywood’s sloppy-ass writers decided to shortcut some of the science for dramatic effect. That would suck.
Honestly, it’s as ground in reality as near-future sci fi can be. Any technology mentioned in the book is in existence or within our engineering capability. XKCD today sums up the plot brilliantly, as well as the disappointment of Matt Damon’s involvement.
Not sure what got me thinking about this yesterday. Maybe it was hearing my pager go off about a EMS call out. Or reading something online about still searching for the missing school girls in Nigeria. But I thought your above post was very fitting to those thoughts. There are those of us who put our own well being before that of our community or country. Police, Fire, EMS, Military, we all do it.
I get all that. I still can’t take Matt Damon seriously. At least Kate Mara is in it, so maybe Netflix.
