I’ve been watching HBO’s Big Love, and wow do they cast it (Mormonism and Polygamy)in a disparaging light.
I didn’t know they oppressed woman as slaves that have no voice.

I’m not a Mormon but as a LEO I can tell you that the vast majority of Mormons are law-abiding citizens.
“Mormons” have not practiced “polygamy” since the late 1890s officially and the early 1900s unofficially. There are splinter groups that have been long excommunicated and have no standing in the church who adhere to that way of life. That has nothing to do with “Mormons”
The groups in Big Love are not LDS, but rather an FLDS like group.
I suppose you could call them Mormons, in the same way Branch Davidians are Christians
I don’t know; since it is illegal and only the crackpots do it we have no real examples in the US to portray.
It’s not just the left for your information. People generally do not like cults. E.G. Scientology, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Pentecostal, etc. Also, it has pretty strong ties to the Neo-Conservative movement that is popular amongst the more outspoken media-portrayed “right”. I can’t say I’m a fan of any religion that forces its views down other people’s throats.
Do remember that Mormonism still has strong connotations of racism, polygamy, and general sexism to many people. It’s why you’ll be very hard pressed to find a single Black person amongst the crowd at BYU’s stadium on game night.
On that note, I have to say I’ve never met a person of the Mormon religion that was offensive in their demeanor. The religion does present some good basic morals for people to follow and it makes all of Utah and Independence, MO a pretty pleasant place to visit. (but it is kinda funny how when you’re going towards downtown independence and the outskirts are all porn shops and strip clubs and in the middle is the spire church and this rather old cityscape).

That has more to do with the very low percentage of blacks in Utah overall. And you do find them in the crowd. Not very many since there are not very many blacks in Utah anyway.
Lots of black and other races in the membership of the LDS church. All over the world. Including in the US.
When I was an LDS missionary in Germany in the mid 80s we had a missionary in our apartment. Black guy from Africa. I have never met a more spiritual as well as gung-ho guy in my life.
I have had black people in several of the LDS congregations I have been members of. In Utah and in New England as well as when I worked for a computer company in Germany.

Hmmm…the hardcore left finds all religion offensive. This was just the LDS’ turn in the barrel.
Not sure how being affiliated with the ‘left’ automatically makes you an atheist. Sounds like an unsubstantiated claim aka myth.
Personally, I like to define “cult” as a religious doctrine, the majority of which’s followers were not born into it. It’s just… easier that way, and leaves the value judgement part to more important things, like how a group acts. That would save a lot of hassle, but common sense isn’t (common).
That’s the only standard I have to judge religious views - do I like these people? Would they be good neighbors? Every Mormon I’ve ever known passes that test easily.
