Posted by some enlightened soul in response to a post I made about the wisdom of carrying a backup pistol:
I truly believe people like you live your life is a constant masterbatory fantasy that you will find yourself in the middle of huge gunfight, terrorist attack, or Hollywood B of A style robbery, etc, etc where you end up killing all the bad guys after receiving a slight grazing wound and expending several dozen rounds of ammunition in the process. When it’s all done you then become the big hero.
Until that day comes you get a feeling of power, excitement, and superiority, over the other people because you always have your 3 handguns, 2 knives, surefire light, 85 rounds of ammunition, OC spray, and zip ties. Without all that you would be just another boring schlub working 40 hours a week like the rest of us. That would be a drag.
An earlier post illustrating his incredible wisdom in response to another poster who mentioned carrying a G26 as a backup:
Where do you work as a police officer? Must either be a bad inner city area or a area where you might not see back-up for 15 minutes or more. Please tell me you are actually a police officer asking this question.
Apparently if you aren’t a cop on the lonely back roads of a nasty city, you don’t “need” a backup…
Because we all know that gunfights follow a script, right? And that nobody’s main weapon ever pukes or breaks or becomes unusable for any reason including the fact that you are wrestling with someone who is trying to kill you…
Somebody needs to tell Ken Hackathorn to stop packing that 642 he uses as a backup…he’ll never “need” it, you see…some guy on the internet says so.
That kind of crap has pretty much zero to do with the apparent topic. It’s all about someone who feels tiny and insignificant trying to make themself feel just a little better by belittling someone else. They’re everwhere, both online and in meat space.
The added complication with our particular subject matter is that such individuals tend to provide fodder for the legion of straw man arguments and other intellectual dishonesties that gun grabbers and other victim creators spread like cancer. It’s just another manifestation of the Zumbo/elitist example.
I posted something similar on GT. Someone kept throwing the word “hero” around like it was an insult?? If people like Gordan and Shughart and all the MoH receptors are classified as “heroes” than friggin’ count me in! I’d be honored.
Basically, my response was why you feel the need to harp on fellow gun owners? Is it because you don’t have the balls to do the right thing so you must disparrage others?
It makes me uneasy because they are Fudds of another sort, ready to appease the antis by sacrificing their own. We saw this with Zumbo which was a good thing but doing it to everyone is beyond idiotic. You can’t appease the antis without giving up your guns totally. Throwing a few bad apples to say “see we aren’t all that bad” won’t do a damned thing but maybe buy a little time.
How can I rely on fellow gun owners to have my back if they spew this crap? We’re all in this fight together and frankly I don’t see why we can’t be more tolerant of differing views.
It’s pointing out serious flaws in mindset and obstacles people have to listening to sound information and to considering the topic of self defense seriously.
A wise man from Virginia once told me, “ARFCom should be nuked from orbit.” I’m inclined to believe he’s right.
It’s unfortunate that the very few good, knowledgeable shooters over there are drowned out by the noise.
As time goes on, the only forums I post on are here and AK Forums. I recently posted occasionally on PAFOA (Pennsylvania gun forum) until a couple of days ago when I decided that hitting myself in the head with a hammer would be more fun.
For some reason, there are multiple threads about guys who want to open carry in Wal-Mart. I’m serious; specifically Wal-Mart, multiple threads, over and over again.
Look, I open carry on occasion and it’s perfectly legal in my state, but I thought that I would post a thoughtful thread about the reasons why I choose to carry concealed almost all of the time.
Well, suffice to say, the OC crowd on that board is more motivated by politics than a need for effective self-defense. Most of them are untrained and would rather cause attention to themselves and their “big iron on their hip” so that they can launch into another political harangue.
I officially gave up; I belive my parting words were, “You can carry your handgun on top of your head, I don’t care. It is your Constitutional Right after all.”
The referenced barfcom exchange is a good example of how hard it is to explain to “normal” people what “we” are all about. They call us Walter Mittyish or paranoid, when we see ourselves as merely responsible. I think it’s just the antis’ brainwashing of the last 40 years that has made what was once considered noble into something the mainstream now considers odd. It boils down to taking personal responsibility, which is a concept that not many people in this country who are under the age of 60 can even understand anymore. (I’m a ripe old 39 BTW, so I’m not a militant codger… yet.)
As far as barfcom itself goes, I’ve noticed pretty much the only people worth paying attention to over there have moved over here… so over here I am.
I think that you are making a mountain out of a molehill. One reason this forum was created was because of stuff like that - not a bad idea to point it out from time to time to remind ourselves why we are here.
Instead it’s degenerated into a discussion on mindset and modern attitudes toward self-defense. Is that a bad thing?
I admit, my reference to “barfcom” may be a bit childish… but I still think it’s appropriate, based on the majority of the drivel posted over there. However, I will try to restrain myself in the future and use the more professional (politically correct) term of “TOS” or simply “ar15.com”.
