I’m not sure that showing up at a recruiting center and flagging the people you claim you are protecting qualifies as any form of security. Like you, I want to give credit for “intent”, but a lot of these clowns had very questionable intentions.
The problem is, the division is already there. A lot of the open carry extremists see concealed carry as borderline treasonous; about a half step from supporting a ban on carrying. Extreme members of any given interest, be it special interest, religion, political views, etc, always group the moderates as enemies and collaborators.
As it’s been said before here, OCers, Oath Keepers, and the other related groups are the gun rights equivalent of the gay rights guys who demonstrate by walking down the street in knee high hooker books and pink man thongs, then pretend to be outraged that people were disgusted.
The gun community really needs to take the “long war” approach. Groups like GOA and Open Carry have a list of demands that they will not compromise on, negotiate on, take half measures on, and will not accept gradually over time. But we lost our rights bit by bit, and the only way we’re going to get them back is to take them bit by bit. An overt, full frontal attack is not always the best strategy.
I am a fan of Mr. Hernandez’s writing, and own both of his books.
He’s also what we in Texas call a good dude.
I actually prefer an “every single opportunity” approach. Not that I’m being dismissive of your point, but we shouldn’t be gradual if we don’t have to be gradual. If not for the Cato Institute the NRA still might be contemplating the Heller case.
And say what you want about pride parade, guys in thongs and assless chaps. They can do it right now in any major US city and the populace will applaud. Of course homosexuals are a “protected class” of people and gun owners not so much so results may vary.
Yeah, it is not like it is the Constitution or something.
No disagreements. But I think Heller is a good example of what I’m saying. DC v. Heller didn’t solve all our problems at once; far from it. But it laid down the foundation from which we can build. From here we must, as you said, go after every single opportunity. Sometimes those opportunities are going to be part of a gradual change, and other times they’re going to be dramatic.
Sometimes it does take baby steps.
