I haven’t bought a brand new gun since 1996 but when I saw this my eyes lit up like a kid on Christmas morning. Then I saw the price tag and all my lights nearly went out. It ain’t 1996 anymore!
It’s not my first 1911 and I generally prefer 9mm but I just had to bring this one home.
It put a pretty big dent in my gun fund, delayed the purchase of a HK and even made me list a BHP for sale but I’m a happy guy.
Now I just have get it out to the range for some real fun.
Yeah but to me at 50 1996 seems like a couple of weeks ago
The crazy thing is that I was born into an Arkansas gun family and spent the first 20 years seriously hunting, shooting and helping my dad raise and train English Pointers. And in the late 80’s & early 90’s my best friend owned a gun shop. I didn’t know how good I had it!
But between college, dad’s death, a real job, grad school, a wife (city girl), and kids (twin daughters) there was no time for the fun gun stuff.
Now things are more stable and I’m able to get back to some of the things I enjoy.
I might even go bird hunting this fall…that will put the ladies in my house into a spin!
Best,
Mike
I’ve been shooting a friend’s XSE lately. It inspires me to mod the frame on my caspian in a similar fashion. Now I’ve been eyeing a Colt XSE Rail Gun. Congrats on your purchase. Stuff isn’t cheap anymore. Wait until you stock up on .45ACP if you want sticker shock.
I know the lines and beauty of the 1911 can be enticing…
But we need to get over the romance of the 1911 pistol, and get on to the business of shooting smelly bad guys in the face with a modern, reliable pistol.
Hks make my head spin. Pappabear has about 50 of those things. Some of them are really nice pistols. The HK45 is awesome. Shot some P30 LEM thing Friday that was amazing.
Everyone should probably own a 1911. Just don’t let it suck the life from you by trying to make it reliable. There’s been millions… maybe billions spent by fools (including myself) who thought they could make the 1911 work.
Nice pistol! I recently got a blue Colt .38 Super Auto. Why? Because I always wanted one, I can reload now and I like the way it looks. I carry something more modern, lighter, more bullets but I just had to have that Colt.
The funny thing is that the Colt can still do the job. So far 100% reliable, accurate and easy to hit with.
The good new is you shouldn’t have to have it throated or tightened and chances are good it won’t need to go back to Colt anytime soon. I’m impressed with the strides Colt has made in QC over the last decade.
The first time I held a 1911 is when I realized that is how a handgun should feel in my hand. It’s not the history, sentimental value, caliber, ‘cool’ factor, etc. . It just feels right. I can’t help it, I was born this way.
I had purchased my first 1911 in the early 1980s, it was a Colt Combat Elite that I stupidly sold 5 years ago.
Then I saw the Gold Cup at the local gun shop and I knew right away that it would be mine.
The sticker shock almost derailed the idea of buying this beautiful gun but I bought it anyway and it has been worth every penny.
Extremely acurate and solid build, it is indeed a pleasure to shoot.
Congrats on your purchase. I’m sure you’ll have no regrets.
I don’t think a bad guy cares if you shoot him in the face with tupperware or REAL STEEL… also all this nonsense about how unreliable 1911’s are is ludicrous!! Why do competitive shooters ala IPSC and steel challenge type ( world’s speed shooting , etc) , basically all use 1911’s or 2011’s. as a former big time IPSC shooter ( well over 500K rds fired thru various 19/2011’s) I can tell you it’s not just the trigger, ergonomics, infatuation, it’s because they work!! Nobody, not even factory sponsored shooters go to multuiple states, spend beau coup bucks to enter a match, hotel fees, etc., with an unreliable pistol.
Now I won’t ARGUE “COMBAT” RELIABILITY BUT HOW MANY HERE ARE GOING TO HELL’S HALF ACRE , VERY FEW. A basically maintained 1911 will run and run. For LE and civilian carry they can’t be beat. And well uncle sam’s misguided children just ordered like 50K units and not just for MEUSOC, they are for general issue. So perhaps it is still a combat ready pistol?!
The best gun is the one you have in hand when needed ( anything is better than a sharp pencil)… I just grow weary of internet chairborne commando’s spouting nonsense. I’m not romantically involved with any of my firearms, the 1911 has it’s place , then and NOW…
Yeah, I agree with a lot of this. My Springer and Armscor 1911’s have been dead reliable (cept for a magazine issue with the mags included with the Armscor which were fixed with 47D Wilson’s) for many thousands of rounds. I have no issues with “modern” pistols, but I think a lot of the 1911 horror stories come about due to some crappy manufacturers (AR’s have them too) and the sheer number of pistols out there from both good and bad manufacturers.
If there were 100 years of Glocks floating around being made by 3 dozen companies I bet there would be a lot of talk about how unreliable it is.
1911’s are great, but some of the modern representations don’t run well. Buy well and you’ll be very happy. If you don’t buy well your options are to see/trade it off or have a competent 1911 pistol smiff fix it for you. Should a 1911 be your only pistol, probably not… Don’t be a “one gun Charlie”… JMO
