20 rounders for use with a bipod or bench. and also with my retro build. 30-rounders just don’t look as good in the weapon.
IMO, the 20 is the best overall physical size.
It is almost exactly the same size as the pistol grip and is therefore the largest size that doesn’t take up “extra” space, while still being easy to grasp during mag changes, unlike the 10 rounders.
For example, a 30 won’t fit in the safe locked into the #1 HD rifle., but a 20 does just fine. ( I know, get a bigger safe…)
That’s basically what it comes down to, whatever you’re doing.
30 and 40 are fine while standing and space isn’t a constraint.
As soon as it is, the 20 tends to work better.
Yes,
The NMHTG 20, Magpul G3 20 and Lancer L5AWM 20 are all excellent.
There is really no good reason to waste time with any mags that aren’t excellent.
I’m kinda surprised by this thread. I realize it’s just a few guys, but people always give me shit about running 20’s.
Figured I was one of the only ones that liked them.
I use them more than 30’s. As previous mentioned they work real well for off the bench or prone. On a 2 way range I’ll take the 30’s in most cases.
Dan
When shooting with others especially new shooters, I often times run the new P-Mag 10’s. Nothing I hate more than handing a rifle to a guy, just to see him shoot the first 5 rounds, then blast the next 25. With 10’s they can only do so much stupid.
When using my AR for hunting, I only use the 10’s. i don;t need 20 or even close to 30 and they get heavy and cumbersome or hang up when hiking and slinging the rifle on/off all day.
I may be in the minority, but I love the look of straight 20’s better than curved, and I wish Magpul still made the straights, even though they were rumored to have reliability issues. Mine (Sample of 1) never gave me any issues, and i would love more.
Now that’s a great idea
Just to chime in, I use 20’s for bench and prone, for me just a little easier to flip around. I think the newer Gen 3 PMAG20 with the slight bend are also aesthetically pleasing to the eye. ![]()
I use 20 rounders to plug magwells when I paint. It makes it easier since I can just stand the rifle up on the mag and it won’t fall over.
Compactness, prone shooting, more reliable regardless of age in a lot of cases, and they just are so handy.
I have surplus 30 rounders from the 90s that were dogs until they got new springs and followers. Total dogs.
Compare with some 20 rounders made in the 60s that saw some Vietnam War use and have never, ever given me a problem. Ever.
I keep 30 rounders for classes and SHTF. But if I’m out on my own time just shooting, I always use my 20 rounders. I actually prefer them for duty use.
Makes my 11.5 even handier. If I need more than 20rds things are starting to get real.
I have a lot more 30s sitting around in the closet, but I always keep a 20rd in my working gun. That reminds me, I need to buy more 20s!!!
I keep old school Colt 20 run magazines in my SHTF carbine stored in my safe. very handy and I can actually store it in safe along with my other rifles
When I joined the military there were a lot of older guys that had been in 'Nam and the Gulf War that echo’d this very thing. From what I can tell this is where the majority of the love of '20s comes from…
Where to get NHMTG 20-rounders now? I notice 44mag.com has sold out and they are listed as “clearance.”
I prefer 20’s. Easier to manage for precision shooting (prone/bipod) and I prefer the smaller size.
I have four Colt 20 rounders that came with my 6940 and 6920.
Love them and probably use them more while plinking and at the range than the 30 rounders.
AR is just flat out handier with a 20rd mag in most cases.
I knew I should’ve nicked me some. Brownells has 20 rounders but not NHMTG. They should work all the same.
You can’t hear it but seeing that out of stock I uttered some horrid blasphemies and unspeakable expletives.
Look under the listings for Okay. I think they just did some corporate name shuffling and are now making the mags with the Okay baseplates. Same mag and company from what I’ve heard, just a name change.
They don’t have any 20 round mags listed under Okay, at least not on 44 mag
Doc
They had 35 of the 20s in stock last night and I ordered 10 of them, checked their site this morning and they’re now OOS.
Not sure if my order was filled but my AMEX was charged?
FYI - they had 100+ in stock last week. I think this thread caused a run on them…
